Since every student learns differently, I spend time getting to know their style and have found success in the past using several examples of problems, asking leading questions, and being prepared to answer any question or go over a topic in more detail. When it comes down to it, I emphasize that a tutoring session is not for me to become a better tutor, but the style and material of the session should be chosen by the student. This means that I come with a variety of options and am prepared to switch the plan as soon as asked. My goal when working with a student is to give them more confidence in the subject and to see improvement each session and overall.
