A Little Bit About Me...

My approach to teaching is to provide what is needed, and sometimes that is not limited to the explicit task at hand. As an English teacher/tutor, I have often found that, rather than merely showing students how to recognize a complete sentence and use correct punctuation and grammar, the more important thing is to prove to them that they can think, and that they are intelligent. To this end, I use gentle Socratic questioning to stimulate students, loosen them up, get them interested, and increase their comfort. Often, what comes out of a student's mouth is surprisingly wonderful, and I quickly say, "That's great! Write that down!"

I taught English to young monks in the Sakya Monastery in Nepal and also tutored young Tibetans new to English. What is called the "Affective Filter" is what I deal with most: that is the part of each student that is unwilling to try. As a recent graduate from the University of California Riverside, I have earned a bachelors of science degree from the institution.
