Special Education is one of my top subjects! I have worked as a special education teacher and a special education school psychologist. I am very familiar with the evaluation process and the IEP process.

I have taught in Michigan and in California. I also have credentials as a school counselor and psychologist. I have experience with all aspects of the special education system from the K through grade 12 level. This incudes testing, placement and re-evaluation and the IEP process. I also have worked at the post secondary level and am familiar with academic and financial aide requirements.
I am very aware of the necessity of adapting my teaching style to the learning modality of those I am working with. As an educator I evaluated students to define how they best process information. They may be auditory learners, visual learners or they may use a combination approaches. I am very patient and understand that everyone can learn. I believe in setting goals and evaluating progress to establish new goals when necessary.

For as long as I can remember I have desired to become a teacher. I didn't pursue it initially because I was lured to careers which netted a greater return on my investment, I thought. I later returned to school and continue education eagerly. I am very much able to connect to students with various backgrounds, abilities and challenges. I have developed a style that not only includes direct instruction but hands-on, inquiry based learning that fosters retention and is delivered in a positive, upbeat, fun environment. All students can learn, but in different ways. I, for one, learn best by watching how something is done. I can read about it, or hear a lecture about it, but seeing it helps me understand the subject. This type of teaching would be done with movies, drawing or acting out the situation. In my teaching, I try to use all methods available to me to help the students learn and to use their creativity. I especially try to get students to work in groups and to share their work with each other. I find that pier groups provide the best help in understanding the subject matter. The classroom should be a learning place of activities and fun.

A Little Bit About Me...

Through my experiences working with children, I have learned to adapt my teaching styles to fit each students' individual needs. Many students learn through visual and tactile means, where as others can pick up new material orally. I also believe it is important for me as an educator to connect with the students in way that each student feels that you understand them. Many students lack self esteem and confidence when it comes to their learning abilities and I am there to help them believe in themselves in order to produce successful work. My background as a bilingual educator has helped me to consistently be culturally sensitive in the classroom environment as well as within the community.

A Little Bit About Me...

I spent 2 years tutoring Math for the students in my Mothers classroom afterschool (4th grade). I spent one year in college working with special needs students from the local elementary school, which included writing lesson plans and executing activities in group form. I taught one year of 7th grade Health and Physical Education. I tutored all the students at the end of the year to help them achieve passing scores on End Of Grade testing.
I do not like to teach out of textbooks. I use them primarily as resources. I prefer to create a lesson or activity that plays to the strengths of the individual child/student and challenges them on their particular level. I have found interactive lessons are very effective for all age ranges.
