Skilled teacher and writer dedicated to your success

I taught high school English, journalism and speech for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013. I also taught a year in middle school, a year in community college and worked in administrative positions at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. I have worked with students at all levels, from remedial to advanced placement and worked in an alternative high school setting. I have received training in the scoring of advanced placement literature exams and am a published writer. I also have taught SAT prep classes.
I like to get to know my students and build a strong relationship with each one. I work to connect the subject matter to their lives and to the real world. I set high standards, but understand that each student will work toward those standards at his or her own pace and in his or her own style.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a strong believer in interrelating knowledge in diverse areas and illuminating its applications to real life in the belief that students are more motivated to learn when the relevance of that learning is clear to them. Students must not simply believe that they have acquired knowledge, but that they have gained understanding if the knowledge is to make any real difference in their lives. I believe it is important, especially with children, to respect the intelligence of the student, and to that end I employ a great deal of Socratic method. I seek to broaden the horizons of all my students, and impart a deeper appreciation for the world and the cosmos that we inhabit through every subject.
I hold BAs in History and Modern Languages (German/French), and have done graduate work in Theology and French Translation. This background has given me a broad understanding across the huma ... read more

While I have six years of classroom teaching experience, I've spent the 20 years since my MA in Counseling as a teacher and trainer for a variety of nonprofits. I have trained volunteers, developed manuals and curricula for children through adults, and offered seminars for as many as 200 people. My five years as a writing instructor for a community college honed my skills in all aspects of writing and drew on my BA in English, as well as my avocation as a writer. My background in counseling makes me well-suited to connect with all kinds of people. I am confident I would make a great tutor.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy learning and try to pass along some of my enthusiasm to my students. I will work with the student to find the best methods for us to approach the material so he or she will have the greatest success. I believe that creating a structure assists in the learning process, but the structure may be different for different people. This is not to say that I impose a rigid schedule or formula to the tutoring sessions, but I do work to create of flow for the the study session which will consistently show the student his or her progress each time.
After returning to college to get my teaching certificate I taught 5th grade for one year. I then taught at a high school in Salinas, California for four years. I enjoy the process of helping students to learn. It is a great experience to see their minds grasp a new concept or idea. I realize that each student is an individual and as such may have a different learning style than another. My goal is to facilitate that learning so they feel and are successful in conquering the lessons to be learned.
I have had a variety of experiences as a teacher. I, at first, worked as a substitute for about 3 years. Then I worked as a 3rd-grade teacher in a private school for one year. Because of enrollment that position was cut. I went back to subbing for a time. From 2004-2009 I have worked for the Dallas School District as a personal tutor. I primarily worked with middle school-high school students. I tutored them both at home and at a computer lab on an internet program. That position was cut because of budget cuts. I am able to tutor in all basic su ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching strategies which have worked for me in the classroom include cooperative learning groups that encourage social interaction, as well as, jigsaw groups. The use of PowerPoint presentations to illustrate the material utilizes a technology component which I find useful. Strategies for special needs students would include making sure to see if they are a visual, auditory, or sensory learner and teach to those senses. I would need to tailor my lesson plans by making the information more interactive for students who have special needs or are English language learners to make sure that they are learning the information. I would have more cooperative group activities and hands-on tasks that the students could engage in, such as a webquest activity in the computer lab. Graphic organizers are always good tools to use.

Teachings students one-on-one is the love of my life. I see progress in this format that is outstanding. Students can make several levels of progress in a short period of time. Providing a positive, constructive and enthusiastic environment is foundational to the success of the student. The teacher also must show by their actions that they are very interested in the success of the student. With positive interventions, there will be a positive difference in the life of the tutored child.

A Little Bit About Me...

Due to my love of reading and writing I have chosen to pursue a degree in the Classics at Whitman College. In 2007 I was asked by a professor to privately tutor another student in Latin. I joined the team at the Academic Resource Center and have been tutoring college students in English and other writing-intensive courses ever since. Meanwhile I have continued my own education in grammar, English, linguistics, and completed essays, creative work, and research papers in various subjects.
I became a tutor at the request of a professor, and this work has led me to discover the joys of teaching. I love assisting students with reading and writing and helping them to find in themselves ability, confidence, and enthusiasm. I am passionate about working with students to find methods of studying that work for them, as well as helping their academic work by addressing other issues such ... read more

I have a passion for higher education and helping young men and women reach their academic goals. I facilitated several ethics courses at Gonzaga University and helped tutor fellow graduate students in research methods and statistical analysis at Oregon State University. My teaching style is focused on the individual student. I realize that not all students are receptive to the same teaching style, as a result I am a flexible teacher who is willing to change my approach if the student is not responding positively to my initial teaching techniques.
I have recently completed my Masters degree in Public Policy from Oregon State University where I worked as a social science researcher with the department of sociology. I utilized several methods in my research, including both qualitative and quantitative research methods. I have extensive experience with SPSS and other statistical softw ... read more

My undergraduate experience has given me both breadth and depth in academic subjects. The curriculum I've studied at St. John's includes 4 years of language (2 Ancient Greek, 2 French); 3 years of laboratory science (physics, chemistry, biology, electricity & magnetism, etc.); 4 years of mathematics (including geometry, algebra, and calculus); and well as 4 years of "The Great Books of Western Civilization" tutorial wherein I have studied philosophy, literature, theology, political theory, and economics. I feel very comfortable in a tutoring position in most academic subjects spanning from K-college.
I am most familiar with conversation, as a means of relating information and testing understanding.
