I have always been a driven student, especially in math and sciences. I first discovered my passion for teaching when my high school friends started asking me to help explain chemistry problems. Later in high school, I tutored my first student in chemistry. I continued my scientific education in college and graduate school, earning a BS, MS, and PhD (2008) in chemistry. During graduate school, I served as a teaching assistant, helping professors in undergraduate chemistry courses by providing close student interaction. I supervised students in 5 laboratory courses (Basic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Instrumental Analysis) and lead discussion sections for 4 General Chemistry courses. If my students still had questions outside of the scheduled class time, they were welcome to come to my weekly office hours, where we would work on a more individual basis. I also designed quiz ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have 9 years of experience in teaching chemistry and physics at the high school level. Additionally, extensive experience teaching/tutoring a myriad of other subjects, such as, earth science, algebra, trigonometry, biology, CPR/first aid, GED prep and various adult education classes. I also have 15 years of practical laboratory experience as a laboratory chemist with increasing levels of responsibility.
To teach is to "impart knowledge or skill to somebody by instruction or example" while education is defined as "to develop mentally, morally, or aesthetically especially by instruction". I aspire to be an educator, as defined above. While I believe in the content of the sciences, I am interested in evoking the thought process to utilize the scientific method as a problem solving technique applicable to all areas of life. Through life, didactic specifics of chemistry may wane, ... read more

My teaching philosophy and primary goal is to first understand and appreciate each child for their unique abilities, strengths and weaknesses, then to channel those abilities toward a better appreciation of the practical value of science and math knowledge. Learning comes easiest when students find benefits to knowledge. Each assignment represents a short term goals, building a student’s confidence with each successful completion. I find by encouraging students to avoid distractions, focus and manage their time effectively, it is much easier to make significant progress on difficult teaching concepts and retain knowledge .
I can offer a student a broad educational perspective with a Ph.D. in the medical sciences and 18 years experience in the Biotech industry. My teaching experience began on the faculty at the UMass Medical School (1993-1999), where I tutored high school, unde ... read more

More About This Tutor...

At Bridgewater State College I started tutoring general chemistry and organic chemistry in the Fall of 2006. I am receiving my degree this May, and have already been accepted to a few PhD programs in chemistry. I am looking for a tutoring job or jobs for the summer, and possibly for longer. I have tutored small groups of five to eight students for chemistry. I have tutored general chemistry, organic chemistry, and chemistry in everyday life, which is a course for non-chemistry majors.
I strongly believe that all students can find success as long as they work for it, and are encouraged to reach their goals. I am very patient with my students, and allow them to really think about the problem and work toward a workable solution. In my small group sessions I will usually present an example and have the students work on it while I go to each student to make sure they are understanding t ... read more

During my Doctoral candidate years, I worked as both a engineering lecturer and laboratory instructor for 3 different engineering fields. The fields were circuit design, applied mathematics and practical laboratory equipment usage. I also gave lectures in Applied Optics (physics) for Seniors at Clarkson University during my last Doctoral year (1984-85) at campus.
Informal for large groups as I wanted the students to see me as like them, but with enough capability to inspire them to listen. I learned early on you cannot make anybody learn anything. You must inspire them to want to learn. At the 1-on-1 setting (tutoring level), I work at a very detailed level with the particular student I have with me at the time. Each one is sufficiently different to warrant different teaching approaches to maximum effect and retention.
