Learning starts with a desire, followed by perseverance

I have a high level of experience teaching in multiple fields. I have trained horses, which takes non-verbal communication, patience, kindness, clear directions, and strong leadership skills. I have taught horseback riding lessons for 7 years, which has taught me excellent communication skills, lesson-building skills, and flexibility. I have worked as coordinator for a barn, from which I gained high-level organizational skills. I have tutored multiple people in English as a Second Language, several in America on a one-on-one basis. A Little Bit About Me...

While at Humboldt State, I completed the College Faculty Preparation Program. This program significantly improved my teaching pedagogy. With regards to tutoring, I feel that it is extremely important to understand and draw on the student’s learning style. As a kinesthetic learner, I frequently promote tactile learning while also introducing elements of visual, auditory, and/or reading/writing exercises, depending on what works best for the student. I’m patient and considerate but feel that it is important to set high expectations for each of my students.
Education has always been my passion. I have the natural ability to relate to kids of all ages. I was a waterpolo coach for five years, and a volunteer mentor for the Blue Ox School in Eureka. I tend to be straight forward and open with the kids about why the authors wrote the books, what they wanted their readers to get out of them, and how these authors weaved lessons into a classic storyline. Your children will immediately feel more connected to these books and short stories, and their reading comprehension will increase five fold.
