While completing my BBA and MA degrees at Wichita State University, I worked for Student Support Services, a TRIO program located on campus. For eight years I tutored low-income and first generation university students serviced by the program. By utilizing innovative tutoring techniques, I achieved a high success rate. In fact, several of my students graduated from university with honors, a goal initially thought to be unachievable. Statistics have revealed that only thirty three percent of students graduate from university, a dismal situation to say the least. I actually started tutoring while I was still in college, helping out one of the science/math teachers, and proctoring classes when she needed me to. I have a BS in Natural Science with a biology emphasis, from which I've gained knowledge in most areas of science and math. I work with student(s) in such a way as to demonstrate the problem or similar problems and then break down the essential steps so as to make it intelligible to the student(s). Sometimes, while defining a problem, it is also important to look at the problem critically and identify why certain attributes are arranged in a certain order. Good visualization is also very important in Mathematics and the Sciences; therefore, I make heavy use of illustrations and the graphing calculator.
