Journalism is one of my top subjects!

While I have never conducted a formal tutoring session, I have edited the work of my peers and more recently assisted my girlfriend's younger sister with the completion of her college essay. From my experience, I have found that I prefer to work one-on-one with the student whose work I am editing. That way, I am able to explain my revisions and help them understand my reasoning behind making certain edits. I'm not, by any means, a hard-nosed individual, but I'll certainly do my best to ensure that the student learns something.
Not only was English my favorite subject as well as the one I was most proficient in in high school, it eventually became my major in college. I majored in Journalism at The University of New Hampshire, and while I have not yet received my Bachelor's of Arts from the institution I am a mere handful of credits away from earning it (9, to be exact), an acco ... read more

My comments on tutoring Journalism : News Writing, PR, and Feature writing proficiency.

I recently graduated from Gordon College with a degree in English Literature and a concentration in Creative Writing. I manage two personal blogs, which include my non-fiction stories, poetry, and artwork, and I have published 5 different articles for various Gordon journals. In high school, I took all Honors English courses, and received college credit for my English AP Exam. At Gordon College, my essay writing abilities, as well as my breadth of creative writing, rapidly developed as I typically had 3-4 writing assignments a week. Writing has become a hobby and a career path for me, and I help others write, edit, and consolidate their ideas. Courses taken include: Intro to Creative Writing Advanced Creative Writing Journalism 1: News Writing Journalism 2: Feature Writing The Literary Journal World Literature British Literarute 1&2 American Contemporary Literature 1945-Present ... read more

I have just completed a Master's Program in the Arts of Teaching at Sacred Heart University. I completed 10 weeks of student teaching where I took on all the responsibilities of a full time 7th grade English teacher. Throughout all of high school and college I worked with children ages 3-15 and taught them how to swim in a Massachusetts accredited program in my hometown. Here, I was responsible for creating lessons and implementing them everyday in a 2-month summer program. In college, I was a Staff Editor and writer for our Newspaper. Here, I ran an entire section and was responsible for working with my wroters and tecahing them how to write an effective Perspectives article. I also had my own article entitled, "Amy Says."

I use traditional style (I have a background in Latin)and proper English; I accommodate current usage. I favor limiting colloquialisms. One must write clearly and concisely. I do not use a metaphor, simile or other figure of speech that is commonly seen in print. A dead metaphor such as "lend a hand", however, is acceptable. I also try not to use a long word where a short one will do. If it is possible to cut out a word, I do so. I use the active not passive voice in most cases.
Tutoring students (high school and college) in English since 2003 in Cambridge, MA. Taught as grad student for three years. I have over 15 years of experience as editor and proofreader. I have been a paid writer.
