Graduate student looking to help students achieve their goals!

I think teaching styles should differ based on the preferred learning style of the student. The teaching style should play on the strengths and preferences of that particular student. That being said, I foster a student-centered approach to learning. This approach encourages the student play an equal, active role in the learning process, rather than a passive role. A cooperative approach is important so the student can feel like he or she is an active and capable participant in learning the material. I also believe in leading by example and allowing the student to use me as a resource for reviewing their work.
I have tutored children off and on since I was in high school. More recently, my time has been spent volunteering with The Giving Tree, where I tutored inner-city children after school and helped organize activities (museums, zoo, etc.) on the weekends. I am currently in the ... read more

My comments on tutoring Drawing : I can assist in basic drawing skills: Perspective, Composition, depth, figure drawing, etc.

Recently began tutoring elementary level math and reading, and am loving it. I have found that I thoroughly enjoy working with the children, and find it very rewarding, and enriching. I am looking to expand my experience, develop new techniques and improve on them while helping people learn, with a genuine interest in their success.
I am positive, honest and will give a lot of encouragement. I want those who I am tutoring to feel rewarded while learning, I want to help my "tutorees" to enjoy learning, and build confidence.

I will only be taking elementary kids as students!

I am currently enrolled in highschool but I tutored many of my cousins for the past several years so I'm great with young kids! I don't have any proper work experience but I'm hoping this will be my first.I have volunteered at many elementary schools and I can speak fluent Hindi and Bengali. So I can communicate with specific kids on a more casual and easier way if necessary.
I'll only be taking elementary kids as students, I can tutor/help them with studies for 1/2 hours every weekday.

Everyone learns in different ways so it's important to me that I get to know the students first. That way I can differentiate the lessons for each student. I have also learned that students are more engaged when it's a subject matter that they care about. Of course it's not realistic that this will always be the case. Sometimes you have to learn things that you are not interested in, but approaching these subjects from the ... read more

I strongly believe that children are our most precious asset and our hope for the future. I am passionate about helping children learn and grow through education and extracurricular activities. I love teaching children and helping them to first realize their abilities and then to reach their potential. Many children are not able to even begin to develop their abilities because they do not have healthy surroundings. I want to help create a positive learning atmosphere so each child's learning experience is positive. I believe in working with each child as a whole person, who has unique dreams and talents. Through education I am able to open up their minds and let them explore the vastness of the world in which we live. I want to be one of the people who make a difference through the lives of children. I have been very passionate about teaching struggling students, particularly in the area of reading. From 2000-2004, I taught struggling 8th grade readers and could see the impact that being behind in literacy skills has on students. Although I had already returned once to PSU in order to add my special education endorsement to my teaching license, I decided to return again to PSU and complete the Graduate Reading Program. I have also worked as a Title 1 Reading Specialist at the elementary level as well as a supplemental services provider within the public school setting through No Child Left Behind. Throughout the last 10 years, I have tutored students at both the middle and elementary school level in writing, spelling, reading and math. I enjoy teaching and creating interest in the subject that is being taught. I have learned from experiance that the more interested the students become in the subject, the better they learn. I have found that many students have a psychological barrier when it comes to mathematics and the sciences. Once that barrier is brought down, the students interest in the subject starts to perk, and it's all uphill from there. I strive to break the subject down for easy understanding, and at the same time create as much interest for the students as possible.
I have an MS in physics and a BS in mathematics. I have twenty years tutoring students in math and physics, starting while working on my BS. I taught trigonometry as a teaching assistant at portland State University while a graduate student. I am most familiar with conversation, as a means of relating information and testing understanding. I think that a through understanding in any subject comes about when a student can recognize the important concepts, and how they relate to each other, and speak those concepts in words which they understand--while gaining the vocabulary and proficiency as each subject demands. Most of all, I am an interested learner, in a variety of subjects, and I am excited to share my interest with others. I have a good sense of when I am being understood, and when I am not. I ask for questions, both so that I can explain myself, and so that that subject might be brought to greater depth.
My undergraduate experience has given me both breadth and depth in academic subjects. The curriculum I've studied at St. John's includes 4 years of language (2 Ancient Greek, 2 French); 3 years of laboratory sci ... read more
