My comments on tutoring College Algebra : Took Algebra, and use mathematics daily.

Students should come to me with problems, questions, and having tried to understand the material first. Questions are important to me because they help give a sense of where you are getting confused and stuck. Physics and Mathematics are difficult, and there is no such thing as a stupid question. Ideally, students will do reading, and then work through concepts and problems with me, where I help when stuck and point out mistakes.

I am a recent neuroscience graduate at Michigan State University and have quite a broad background in science so I would be able to help in many of the fields that I have listed for that as I have taken some advanced courses in that field. I have passed numerous actuarial exams that cover advanced mathematic topics as well as becoming a charterholder in the CFA Institute in 2009. This has provided me with an extensive background in the basic as well as the more complex maths and sciences needed to achieve the successes I have. As an undergraduate majoring in chemistry, I was provided with many opportunities to use my abilities to help those classmates of mine who had questions or needed extra help. During the last 8 years, I have had the opportunity to tutor students in chemistry, basic mathematics, and work with elementary school afterschool program for at risk children. I have extensive experience with research papers and lab reports.

I worked in the Math Department, as either a tutor or a Teaching Assistant, for the past three years. As a Teaching Assistant I led a 50 minute recitation of the material, graded materials, and kept records for my 30 students. As a tutor I helped MSU undergraduates learn key concepts and study for their upcoming exams. I worked in the Algebra room and the Calc I room. I helped out a little in the Calc II room, but I never had time, as a full time student myself, to review the material and refresh my memory, so I was much less helpful than I should have been.
I love teaching because I love passing on knowledge. I believe anyone can learn anything they want, it just takes us all different lengths of time and effort to achieve our educational goals. As a tutor and a TA I was always trying to rethink my presentation of the material when the students seemed confused. We all think abou ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Being no stranger to difficult classroom settings, I understand that ideal teaching conditions rarely exist. I enjoy to challenge of encouraging more distracted students to learn, and possess the compassion and patience to work with most students. If a teacher can earn a student's respect, which comes easier for a younger instructor such as myself, then positive reinforcement has a much greater impact on that student's motivation to learn. My experience teaching lends the skill to gain student's trust in confidence allowing me to achieve great things with any student, all of whom deserve positive roles models and passionate teachers.

A student does not benefit from having their teacher do their work. I find that modeling a concept once or twice suffices. After that, a student is best served by having their teacher guide their mental processes so that they become accustomed to the mode of thinking that either results in the correct answer (in a quantitative subject) or a strong, well-reasoned argument (in a qualitative one). Such guidance must be based on the individual student's interests and aptitudes.
In the past four years as an undergraduate, I tutored in virtually every area of my expertise: English, creative writing, mathematics, and physics.
