My personal style of learning is to learn by doing. I get my students involved in any process and get them to actually do the work so they learn it from experience, not just reading about it and taking for granted they know what is going on. I graduated Athens State University in 2005 with a BS in Elementary Education (K-6). After graduation, I became a substitute teacher for six months. In 2006 I was hired on by Decatur City Schools. I have taught kindergarten, first grade, and second grade for Decatur City Schools. I am currently employed with Decatur City Schools as an aide. I have also tutored children at The Dyslexia Clinic in Decatur. I have worked with children ranging in ages 4 years old to 18 years of age.

A Little Bit About Me...

Before I start tuoring a child, I like to get know them first. I think it's important to build trust with a child before jumping in and telling them what to do. A child will be more likely to accept help from someone they know rather than a total stanger. I like to make learning fun.
At Birmingham-Southern College, I was the News Editor for the college newspaper for two years. In addition, I have a minor in Journalism. I love to write and I feel that this is one of my strong points. I also tutor two young girls every Wednesday afternoon at Girls, Inc. of Central Alabama. While tutoring at my college, I received specialized training on identifying and adjusting to different learning styles. I use this knowledge to tailor each session to the needs of the individual student. To track progress, I like to set both short-term and long-term goals and create manageable steps toward reaching these goals. I also think it is important to teach students to establish general study skills so that they can make their own study plans for future courses.

I have a BA degree in Communications;Journalism. I have been substitute teaching for over 13 years. I have completed a Teacher Certification program and 2nd grade student teaching. As a substitute teacher I have held long term teaching assignments in 2nd grade, middle school reading, elementary special education, and high school. I have held Preferred Substitute Teacher List status in Michigan and Ohio.
My desire has always been to be a teacher. I enjoy working with children to reach their greatest potential. Everyone can learn but we may not all get there the same way or at the same time. Some children are not able to reach their potential in the classroom for many different reasons, they may need more individualized attention, they may be more visual, hands on, etc. Some children may just need more time.
