Tutoring opportunities for elementary age

I generally enjoy using flash cards as a form to help the child grow in what ever subject they need help growing in. More importantly though to me it generally depends on the child his/herself and if they are auditory, visual, or kinesthetic learners.
I have much experience tutoring young children from ages 5-14 in all of the four main subjects. It all started with my little sister when I was in High school and began expanding from their with her classmates and classmate friends and so forth bringing me to volunteer at the YMCA for young boys and girls club after school program, and I also have worked at public schools in D.C for after school programs for home work time. I have been tutoring for the past 5 years and have used my experience to help young children grow in education and achieve academic goals.

STRESSED is just "desserts" spelled backwards!

I use the didactic teaching style, trying to keep teaching/education engaging and fun. Rather than talking AT the student, I explore WITH the student the subject at hand. Sometimes the round-about way is the most direct way to solve the problem.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and working with all children. I believe all children can learn, but each in different ways. I am available to help your child find academic success. I am patient, easy going, and considerate. My goal is to provide the best education possible. I am a firm believer in teaching through discovery and in providing a constructivist approach to learning. I believe all children can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings and learning experiences. A few good educators can make a world of difference in a child's education. I strive to make a difference in all of my students' lives.

More About This Tutor...

During my undergraduate work at Florida State University I had the opportunity to spend many hours over the course of two years working in elementary schools with children. I have taught and helped tutor in all elementary subjects. My main internship was in a first grade classroom. I have always enjoyed working with children and seeing the light of understanding in their eyes.
I try and find the style in which the child learns best. Many children just need help getting to where they want to go. I don't believe in ever just giving a child answers. You as teacher or tutor should lead them in the path of understanding and ask leading questions to get them to go in the right direction for the answers. Children should be able to explore their world and not be resigned to worksheets and rote answers. Learning should be a fun experience that everyone enjoys.

A Little Bit About Me...

My BS is in Social Work and my MAT is in Elementary Education. Through my experience as a teacher, social worker and coach I have found my passion in educating children. Teaching in a Title I classroom I specialized in working with students in need of additional help in Math and Reading. I am trained in DIBELS, Wilson, and Read Naturally. DIBELS is an assessment to show if students are on grade level. Wilson is a reading program that aids students in fluency. Read Naturally's focus is fluency, vocabulary and phonics. In Math I worked with skill groups. The students were divided into specific groups depending on the student’s weakness in a particular area of Math. Some students may need new strategies or repetition.
I love teaching and want to make a difference in my student's lives! I am a firm believer that every student has their own individual way of learning. Som ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a wide variety of experience and an innate desire to learn more about the world around me. I began my undergraduate degree in Political Science, but after taking a Biology course in California, became rather excited about the sciences. I have worked in a variety of laboratory settings, as well as in the field, applying the science that I have learned to real life situations and truly gaining a better understanding of the dynamic nature of the sciences. This is what I love. From reading the latest National Geographic to listening to Science Friday on NPR, the never-ending potential of science today excites me and certainly makes me a more dynamic, animated instructor.
My teaching style is very adaptive and enthusiastic, stemming from a genuine love of the material. I enjoy getting students excited about science and the endless potentials that may be found within the scie ... read more
