I love teaching. I earned my BA before I was old enough to vote. While my classmates were in his/her senior year, I was teaching. Eventually I earned my M.Ed. in Reading, then started School Administration and Adult Education. In all these fields I find similar necessary skills: patience, co-operation among staff and colleagues, knowledge of subject matter, communication with the community and parents and a well defined curriculum. I have taught for the past 4 years at a private, weekend school. I have also tutored high school and college students in various subjects, including: math (Algebra, Calculus), science (Biology, Chemistry), and Spanish. I am currently offering tutoring in the aforementioned subjects. In college, I was a pre-medical student studying Spanish, which is why I tutor those subjects.
I prefer guiding the student into developing an understanding of the material, rather than dry lecturing.

More About This Tutor...

I have 15 years of successful teaching and tutoring experience at the middle school, high school and college levels. I have consistently improved my students' knowledge of the subject matter as well as their grades and confidence in themselves. I always explain the material step by step and never assume that the student knows the material the new topic is based upon. I firmly believe that in my case the knowledge of the subject matter, ability to explain it and patience make the winning combination.

My comments on tutoring Algebra I : With a strong background in mathematics, I can easily assist students to learn algebra. I will make sure students have a strong foundation in earlier mathematical concepts, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc. in order to make the learning of new concepts easier. Most difficulties in math stem from the failure to master concepts from earlier grades that should be firmly in place. If these concepts are not well learned, the student is attempting to learn a very new concept in addition to relearning previously taught concepts! Sometimes it is necessary to reteach these crucial concepts to insure mastery before a student can be successful learning algebraic concepts.

I have taught for many decades and use a variety of teaching styles since all students learn differently. I am more of a 'traditional' style teacher, realizing that the basics are vital. I am a visual learner myself, but realize that my students may not. I always teach so that all students learn..using visual, hands on, and auditory presentation of material. I am extremely thorough and endeavor to be sure my students have mastered a concept before moving on to more complex topics. I ALWAYS make what I am teaching relevant to the students...showing them how they will use what we are learning in a real life situation. This not only makes it more interesting, but the students enjoy seeing real life situations in which they can use some of the more obscure topics such as fractions, etc. I make learning fun and exciting! Getting the students involved and active is a huge part of lea ... read more

CPA- available for most of accounting and math courses

Worked in a public accounting firm (Big4). I have been tutoring financial and managerial accounting at school for two years as a teaching assistant. My expertise is in accounting including EXCEL. I also have very strong mathematical skills. The strategies that I give to students in preparing for an exam seem to bring good results.
Instead of telling answers right away, I encourage students to think and help them think in the right direction. I also teach students strategies on how to study effectively.
