Learning needs to have importance to a student. They need to understand why they need to learn the things they are being taught. Then it makes more sense to them. If possible, teach to their strengths. If they like computers, find a website that gives them practice. If they are better writers than listeners, have them dictate and read it back to you. Flashcards work well for some while others have difficulty remembering things. It all depends on the strengths of that child as to what is the best way to teach.

As a special needs teacher, I have worked with many students who simply needed someone to show them a different way to learn the material. Learning can be made so much easier when taught in a format that is fun. This makes it enjoyable and more likely to be remembered. In a tutoring one-on-one kind of setting, times tables could be taught with a deck of cards and using the two numbers thrown out as the problem. Reading and writing can be done by taking pictures and creating a story from the pictures you have taken. It costs the price of a throw away camera and the students love it. When I was in high school I excelled in math, particularly in Geometry. I assisted my father in tutoring a great deal of his clients. Once I graduated high school I pursued tutoring in Tallahassee where I attend college. I started off as an afterschool counselor for Belle Vue Middle School but my job soon turned into a teacher's assistant position because of my natural teaching abilities. Everyday after school I would be assigned to 20-30 students to assist with homework and other school assignments.
