I am a former newspaper writer/editor having worked in the journalism business for 18 years. I worked as a sports writer for the first half of my journalism career, having covered the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks. I interviewed professional athletes, coaches, and league officials to find out what was going on with the team and I attended home and away games and wrote about what happened. Vastly experienced, encouraging and patient tutor.

To teach reading, I teach the children to use all the reading strategies used by good readers.Examples of those strategies would be sight words, visual and context clues, and phonics. Then, I prefer to use leveled readers to improve their fluency and comprehension. For writing, after assessing their composition, I work with them to improve where needed skills such as organization, elaboration, complex sentences and transitions. I use hands on materials and lots of practice to teach math.
I taught grades kindergarten, first grade and second grade for a total of twenty-six years. Since then, I have tutored pre-k through 5th grade. My last assignment was tutoring a fifth grader in writing composition. I have worked as a tutor with several children on their reading, spelling and math skills. I worked as a UIL coach for creative writers in second grade.

I have experience teaching not only at the college level, but also for grades 6-12. I was an English teacher during my most recent stay in France and I've tutored Accounting at Houston Community College. As an English teacher, I taught not only grammar and comprehension specifically to students that had issues with the grammar of English, but I also was involved in teaching Shakespeare to the students as well as many different forms of English literature. In addition, I have acted as a French tutor for many years.
I try to avoid lecture in teaching. For me, personally, instruction comes from helping the student understand the material on their own without having to directly be told everything. This comes through in creative exercises that help the student to understand the concept better and to hold onto the idea much easier.

As an instructor, I taught two classes per long semester and one, intensive summer session. Educated professional - Alternative tutor

I worked in after school progrmas all through college and generally enjoy helping children study. I am very engaging, patient and relate well to any age child or young adult. I am not a proto-typical, traditional "tutor" in that I never studied education in a pedagogical sense, but I am highly educated and always made high grades in every level of school.
