I discovered my gift for teaching as an undergraduate and it has been my life's work. My approach is to guide students in making their discoveries rather than making them remember what I discovered and told them about. As a student, I am driven to understand the nature of things. As a teacher, I work to help others understand them. From my experience, I have learned to be patient with people who are afraid of failure and to push students who are easily bored with basic work. I have earned a bachelor's degree in computer science because computers are the tool with the most potential to enable us to understand the world, second only to the mind. To this end, I encourage my students to think long and hard about the problem they want to solve before they put too much work on a false lead. I find that the better students are aware of this and struggling students become more enthusiastic about learning after they discover this.
