A Little Bit About Me...

As a student of history I tend to emphasize that nothing happens in a vacuum. People and events must be placed in a context. Understanding when and where is an important first step to understanding why, whether the subject be literature, theology, philosophy, or politics. Source materials must be central to any academic undertaking. Every reputable campus has at least one library containing printed resources that are invaluable. Additionally, every student should have access at home to very basic resources such as a dictionary, a thesaurus, and perhaps an encyclopedia. I dread the day that printed material becomes unfashionable.

I hold a Masters degree in Linguistics, and have teaching experience for students of all ages, in various settings, including as a substitute teacher in public schools, a full-time teacher of ESL at the University of Iowa, an adjunct ESL teacher at Northern Virginia Community College, and ESL/SAT tutor with a private company. I have worked with students of many different backgrounds, ages, and abilities. I love to help a student find that "a-ha" moment where he or she finally understands a concept that has been a struggle. I enjoy teaching new concepts or working with students to master a concept.
I currently teach in an interim classroom for secondary students who have been suspended or expelled. I teach all subjects, but am most comfortable with LA and math.
