Journalism is one of my top subjects!

Not only was English my favorite subject as well as the one I was most proficient in in high school, it eventually became my major in college. I majored in Journalism at The University of New Hampshire, and while I have not yet received my Bachelor's of Arts from the institution I am a mere handful of credits away from earning it (9, to be exact), an accomplishment I am attempting to achieve by transferring credits over from The Community College of Rhode Island. While attending UNH, I wrote for the school's newspaper, The New Hampshire, edited my fellow writer's work, and eventually went on to intern and temporarily work for our local Valley Breeze.
While I have never conducted a formal tutoring session, I have edited the work of my peers and more recently assisted my girlfriend's younger sister with the completion of her college essay. From my experience, I have found that I p ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have worked with teenagers, young adults and older students returning to college. I work especially well with students who have a lack of confidence about their academic or intellectual abilities. May students have told me years after taking my courses that they would not have made it to graduation without my help. I also served as a drama director at one of my colleges and produced 4 highly successful full-length plays. Ten years after one of the productions the entire cast planned a surprise reunion for me at a local restaurant. I could ask for greater 'applause' for my teaching efforts.

A Little Bit About Me...

My experience in the field of tutoring is personal. I do not have formal previous experience with a formal institution that provides me with students to tutor- instead- my love and passion for reading, writing and literature in general has driven me to tutor friends and family concerning this subject matter. My BA from Wheaton College has given me the necessary background needed to be an influencial tutor in these (and other!) areas. I was just certified as a Yoga Teacher in June of 2010, and though this may seem unrelated, my passion for yoga has further sharpened my communication skills, also preparing me to suceed in this field.
As the oldest of five children I not only love children, but I have a life-time long experience with them. I have babysat for years in my spare time- I am great at communicating and connecting with children. The connection factor is what I believe to be ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I recently graduated cum laude from the University of Rhode Island with two Bachelors of Science in Marine Geology and Maritime Law. I teach sailing and environmental education in the summers. This means very little however as I aspire, one day, to become a lighthouse keeper. Sadly, few can find such a position these days. I enjoy writing, science, mathematics, literature and most all music.
When I taught sailing to young kids, I used to dress up like a pirate. I have lots of energy. I know I'm doing my job right when kids start laughing. When I taught to teenagers, I kept in mind my own experiences at that age. If I'm helping a student study hard on that big, important test that might have the ability to crush the student's soul - I bust out my acoustic guitar and sing about how It's The End of The World As We Know It (And This Test Means Very Little In The Long Run ... read more

I also tutored a third grade student in writing and he finished the Connecticut Mastery Test in writing with the highest possible score after my work with him. My teaching style is organically structured, with an emphasis on scaffolding prior knowledge to new concepts. Being sensitive to the diversity of learners, I customize my teaching style to fit each individual’s specific needs. I have high expectations for my students, however, I base my expectations on their ability levels; levels that I am constantly monitoring in order to determine whether I need to ramp up the level of instruction or make accommodations until the theory at hand is fully grasped. Not only do I emphasize the curriculum at hand, I also teach the student that proper organization and study skills can have significant impact on their overall academic success.
