I love kids - they are often sweet, funny, easily impressed and are a great audience. I know that it is possible to make learning fun through a close, interactive relationship with a student - showing and guiding them through your own discovery of the subject. There have been times when I could feel one of my students learning; it is always a smile-provoking moment and I treasure every one.
I have a Master of Arts degree in English from Utah State University and have taught EFL overseas and within the US. Recently (from 07-08), I worked as a Math Tutor for challenged fifth graders and also for Kindergarteners part-time at Lincoln Elementary in Layton while my son was in pre-school. I am competent in elementary math and sincerely enjoy helping others to find the inherent beauty of numbers and what they can do.

I have a very interactive personality. I love to get kids involved in their subjects outside of the textbook. I have seen from years of experience that students do better when the can find real life applications of material in everyday life then just to finish an assignment. I know that there are many different learning styles and no one particular way can be right for every child. Having recently graduated with a master's degree in Literature and Writing, during which I also taught two college-level freshman writing courses, I am well versed in literature, writing mechanics, organization, brainstorming techniques, etc. I have taught high school on the Navajo Reservation. I received an English bachelor's degree from BYU. Also, as a professional writer myself, it is necessary for me to possess a wide knowledge base: mathematics, physics, biology, ecology, geography, etc. I am also fluent in Spanish.

A Little Bit About Me...

While in law school, I assisted students enrolled in a summer program with residential advising and subject mentoring/tutoring. The program was offered through CLEO and hosted by Valparaiso with classes being taught by visiting professors from participating schools. The program launched students with passing grades from that program into the study of law by helping them overcome some shortfall in their application. During my time in law school and as a law clerk, I primarily spent my time researching and comprehending laws and regulations, and subsequently writing briefs and memorandum. I have also assisted my three nieces and nephews in their school work and learning. My strengths are reading, comprehension, and writing.
