A Little Bit About Me...

As an engineering graduate from BYU, I have extensive training in physics and math, as well as a solid foundation in how to apply these studies to real life situations. Problem solving is a strong suit, and I feel the principles gained from engineering studies apply to a host of fields where the primary objective is solving problems. As a volunteer in Japan for 2 years and also as an engineer with Toyota, I have developed comfortable conversational Japanese in both personal and scientific settings. I have worked as a teacher on the Big Island, and spent over ten years as a volunteer trainer at public access television facilities in New York and Texas. I am currently seeking tutoring work as I complete the last year of my online "masters in elementary education" program. My strategy to learning unknown subjects is very close to the same way children learn to walk, by immersion. Everything we learned as children was assimilated through watching, mimicking and attempting. I believe personal experience and learning are very close and in teaching I try to keep that in mind. I find myself a very visually inclined learner and utilize that to help others learn, such as drawing or watching videos. I have found that audio learners do well when given analogies and kinesthetic learners do well with drills or acting out what they have learned all to mimic what their learning so that it might sink in better much like how when we learned to say our first words.

A Little Bit About Me...

Though I received my degree last June, most of my teaching experience came while I was still learning. In high school, I worked as a museum docent for after-school programs - at one point trying to convince 3rd graders that M.C. Escher's life and work were as exciting as the afternoon TV they were missing. While in college, I worked for Apple computer, teaching adults in one-on-one tutoring sessions in computer usage. My method of studying for my finals was to show up to study groups not to learn the answers, but to reinforce my own learning by explaining the relevant topics to my peers.
