A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is based on building an empowering relationship between teacher and student. The aim in my teaching is to make the student into an out-going self-learner and to teach the student positive ways of challenging himself. A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in outdoor education. I have worked with students in a variety of settings both in the public schools and in the outdoors. I was a site facilitator at a before and after school program, tutoring 60 children grades K-5. I recently published a book called Light Hearts and Heavy Packs outlining my adventures on the Pacific Crest Trail. I have tutored / mentored in a variety of subjects including English, mathematics, science, etc.
My style of teaching is extremely flexible. I realize that different students learn in different ways. I strive to find each students individual style and create a unique program to fit their needs. I am patient and creative and love working with children of all ages.

During my Master's program at UCLA, I was exposed to different ways of teaching and believe that students learn in a variety of ways. My college experience was unique to the learning community. Instead of theorizing and contemplating what lives the subjects we studied were living, we lived amongst those most only read about. In addition to traditional bouts of homework and exams I lived in the homes and attended their schools. The philosophy, language and religions they lived became our texts. During which I spent an extended amount of time learning about Japanese culture, their language and their traditions. In Japan I was able to pick up a majority of their spoken and written language, which inevitably assisted me in completing an unprecedented study of the Chinese in Japan.
