Everyone absorbs knowledge differently so it is important to cater to each student's particular needs. I am a very hands-on learner and I feel that is the best way to be taught, especially outside of a classroom setting. By getting the body involved in the learning process, the mind is kept stimulated.
I have helped tutor since I was a freshman in high school. I began working with kindergarteners through third grade students on reading and writing. Throughout my sophomore year of high school I tutored middle school math students (ages 11-14) and helped to train our "Mathalon" team. During my studies I was able to tutor for a program called Upward Bound. I tutored students in many subjects in order to get them ready for college. In order to complete my degree at SUNY Potsdam I had the experience of student teaching. My teaching style is a combination of techniques I found successful during my educational studies. First, I believe the teacher has to be passionate and have a true love for what he or she is doing; this is passion, or lack thereof, is evident when interacting with a student. Second, patience is of upmost importance. In my experience, nothing inhibits learning as much as a rushed or pressured feeling when one is trying to learn.
