I emphasize understanding the principle as opposed to just “getting the answer”. Sometimes a student will get frustrated with me because of that, but I’m committed to teaching how to fish and not just handing out fish. For example, with a mathematical problem, I may throw out additional problems revolving around the same principle at hand to make sure the student really understands as opposed to just getting past one question. Similarly, in a linguistic setting, after the student feels he or she understands the given word or grammatical structure, I will ask the student to construct additional sentences to make sure they really get it.

My education in international relations and international public affairs has allowed me to gain knowledge in the social sciences and foreign languages. As an undergraduate student, I studied and worked in Spain, which has given me the opportunity to hone my Spanish skills. In graduate school, I participated in a number of Mandarin Chinese intensive language programs, both in the United States and mainland China. I have tutored students in high school and college and have also served as a mentor to undergraduate and graduate students. As a future university professor, students’ success and understanding of the subject at hand is of the utmost importance to me.
