Reading Tutoring - Wilson, Orton-Gillingham, Lively Letters

Wilson Reading, Orton-Gillingham and Brain Gym® The great advantage of individualized reading tutoring is that my students have my undivided attention, expertise and the promise that I am diligent in using and seeking the exact interventions that they need to learn with confidence and a sense of accomplishment. Wilson Reading is a system of reading tutoring, based on Orton-Gillingham and years of research and experience, that organizes the English language by its six syllable types and spelling patterns. It is recommended for students from grades two through adult who need a higher level of reading intervention than is possible in a regular classroom setting. Orton-Gillingham is an approach to reading acquisition that is well researched and takes the whole child into consideration. Originally taught to doctors, teachers and therapists at Columbia University and at Mass General H ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer an interactive approach to teaching. My goal is to help students develop critical thinking and problem solving skills by themselves, limiting their dependence on tutoring or other guidance. For younger children, I have experience teaching grammar in an innovative game-setting.
I'm a recent college graduate with two Bachelors degrees from Salem State University: one in English/Writing and one in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Applied Social Ethics. In college, I have won two essay writing contests within the philosophy department, and placed third in a university creative writing competition. I recently completed an internship that used innovative techniques to teach grammar skills to college freshman. I have presented at two undergraduate philosophy conferences, in Salem, MA and in Forest Grove, Oregon. I have experience teaching large groups and one-on-one stud ... read more

I have taught reading during a four year period, both junior high and high school levels. Most of this was classroom rather than individual instruction. The training I received during my graduate studies for my Masters degree consisted of analysis of the English language in terms of reading skills as well as methods for teaching such to individuals or small groups.

Individualized instruction

I taught for seven years in public education. My experience spans from grades 5-8. In that time, I worked with a diverse population with varying needs. My classroom was inclusionary which required modification of instruction, and learning about a variety of learning disabilities. Many of my students were ESL, as well.
Brain based instruction focusing on individual learning styles.

With a little work, you will get there!

Being an undergraduate at WPI and haven taken several Advanced Placement classes in areas outside of math and science, I consider myself a very well rounded student. I was also strongly considered for a MASH program here at the University, or "Math and Science Help", as a Section Leader/Tutor. Going through a lower-middle class urban high school, I was known as that "smart kid" and would often led study groups outside of class to prepare for tests.
I have struggled with the areas I am not proficient in, so I understand what it is to be frustrated and confused. My teaching style is presenting various approaches to the same idea, in hopes that at least one will click, and better yet, each approach with solidify an idea or concept that much more.

College Undergrad Looking to Tutor English Students

Not only was English my favorite subject as well as the one I was most proficient in in high school, it eventually became my major in college. I majored in Journalism at The University of New Hampshire, and while I have not yet received my Bachelor's of Arts from the institution I am a mere handful of credits away from earning it (9, to be exact), an accomplishment I am attempting to achieve by transferring credits over from The Community College of Rhode Island. While attending UNH, I wrote for the school's newspaper, The New Hampshire, edited my fellow writer's work, and eventually went on to intern and temporarily work for our local Valley Breeze.
While I have never conducted a formal tutoring session, I have edited the work of my peers and more recently assisted my girlfriend's younger sister with the completion of her college essay. From my experience, I have found that I p ... read more

Tutor available for English and Drawing artwork!

As far as teaching goes, I am mostly here to help the person with the way they write their papers, organization of paragraphs, spelling, whether or not the writing makes sense to the reader, and whether or not the reading understands what is written. I believe in being honest about my critiques to the person's writing and being a fair judge all to help the student improve his or her skills so they can become not just good but great at what they are doing. As far as drawing goes, I will do my best to help the person understand the concept of shapes and building a good foundation for their art work.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a senior at the Boston Conservatory studying Music (voice performance). Spanish is my first language but I have studied English since the age of 4. I love learning new things everyday and believe the key to learning is being curious and asking questions. We are all different types of learners and if we can identify how we learn best we can enjoy learning!! I enjoy tutoring but what I love most is teaching how to enjoy the learning process.
