I have a passion for learning as well as sharing my knowledge with others. I obtained a BA in Mathematics and am currently working on MAT in Mathematics. While in college I was part of a tutoring/mentoring program and helped my peers with math. I also had an opportunity to prepare high school students for the Alabama Grad Exam during a summer session with the Upward Bound Program. I currently help children in my community with any problems they may face in mathematics.
Teaching has been a desire of mine since I taught math at a local high school for two years. I love to see the light-bulb go on inside as children grasp material they are struggling with. At first, I teach and watch to see their facial expressions and comprehension in order to figure out what they are struggling with. Then, I approach the topic from a different way, tailored to their specific struggles. I continue to reassess their comprehension and approach the topic from different angles until I break through. Take algebra, for example. Often times, students struggle with having to "show their work." The long process required to get to the answer becomes confusing. I find that a simpler, shorter process is comprehended well. So, I start with this. I make sure that they have mastered the shorter, simpler technique and then, I broaden their understanding so they are able to master the longer process required by their teachers.

A Little Bit About Me...

I try to find out the learning style of the person I am teaching and use that as my primary teaching style. Some people learn better by hearing, some by reading or seeing and some by doing. I think focusing on the style that the person prefers to learn and then backing it up with the other styles to reinforce what they have learned is the best way for the student to retain the information. I think it is important to include all 3 styles no matter which way the person learns best because they need to be able to learn in the style their other teachers use as well.

A Little Bit About Me...

I break down subjects to the most basic level and build from there. This is the way all of my football coaches did things each year, they taught football stance at the beginning of August no matter the player's experience. Some students find this condescending but it usually progresses fast enough to reach their skill level without offending. I have always found that starting at the bottom prevents misunderstanding as you build toward the top.
