Throughout my undergraduate career, I have come to realize that I try to be gentle but firm with the students. As a foster parent, I tutored our first child as he progressed through kindergarten and the first grade. His previous school experience was lacking at best, and he had little confidence in his scholastic ability. I was able to pinpoint his natural aptitude--mathematics--and use it to help not only boost his self-esteem regarding academics, but also to tailor my approach to his other subjects as well. Since math is very much tied to logic, using logical constructs to aid him in his critical thinking proved fruitful in showing him how to solve problems regarding tasks such as alphabetization, grammar, and spelling, among others.

I would say that it is a little more toward laid back. Being over 6" tall, stocky, pushing hard, being an ogre, hard-nosed, that isn't going to work for me. People have a tendency to be a bit intimidated and fearful because of my size. I will use it to my advantage if it is necessary, or becomes necessary, but I've found being a little more quiet, reserved and coaxing the student to initiate the discussion is a little better. Ask leading questions, adjust and proceed, based on their response.
