A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching, but I especially love one on one tutoring. Students I have tutored typically have a much better understanding of the subject they are studying. I approach tutoring as a facilitator of learning, rather than a professor of knowledge. Learning by discovery is a key aspect of my tutoring. I act as more of a guide, steering students in the right direction as they learn. This leads to much more meaningful and applicable learning.

I love teaching because I truly enjoy seeing the light come on when a student gets it. I have had some excellent teachers in my life and have used their techniques to help students I tutor. I understand there is not one specific way to teach a subject and the key is asking questions to find out what will help a particular student. I find it helpful to use processes students are familiar with and expand upon that knowledge. I am a firm believer in showing why something works the way it does, not just showing the solution. I believe that people learn in different fashions. For example, I feel that some concepts may be better explained with tangible objects while other concepts are learned better when questioned and discussed. By exploring the different ways of learning we can find what works best for that individual and use that method as a tool for their understanding. I feel, in the past, that many of the peers I tutored not only obtained/recollected more information, but were more comfortable in a quiet, relaxed environment.
