Whenever I have been recruited to help someone in the past I have been a firm beleiver in less is more. Though it is important for the person to understand what he/she is reading or writing it is important to shadow their work instead of smothering them. I always feel for both myself and others that learning comes from doing and trying by ones self, and asking for help only when needed. Of course this style is useless if the explanations and guidance that go with it are not clear and fascilitate the process for the student.

I love teaching. I always get well prepared before I sit down with someone. A couple of hours of preparation beforehand can make the difference between a tedious, unproductive experience and one that encourages the student and makes the excited about learning. I try to help with sticking points and not to lecture. I have discovered that people tend to remember answer to their questions and if I try to explain a deeper meaning it will only bore them and make them less interested.

During my 23 years of teaching I implemented Kindergarten through 6th grade New York State curriculum in a classroom setting. I attended workshops that focused on computer education, Multiage classroom and positive discipline.
I believe children learn best when they can form a connection to their school work. Writing skills can be improved by using topics that are relevant to the student's life. When working on Reading skills I often use high interest topics such as the arts, sports, computers and science to encourage students to excel. Once I am assigned a child I initally spend time going over a typical homework assignment to see where they are having some trouble. I get them to read out loud to me to see what their level of reading is. Some kids have problems sounding out the words or with simple rules of grammar. Once I see where they are at then I start bringing in some workbooks to help them in that particular area and apply that to their homework.

As a teaching major, I did my student teaching during my last semester of college (in kindergarten and third grade). This was in the spring of 2008. The next fall (2008), I was a substitute teacher for 4 months and then I was hired as a preschool teacher (in January of 2009). I taught as a preschool teacher for 10 months and then went back to substitute teaching (in October 2009) and have been substitute teaching since then. These experiences have taught me how to teach a variety of grade levels (from preschool to 5th grade). My goal is to obtain a full time teaching job and want to do whatever I can until I get one.
