Physics is one of my top subjects! I just graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Physics

I have been a Teaching Assistant, Learning Assistant and physics tutor for the past 3 years. During that time I have had roughly 80 to 120 students a year that I have had direct contact with through the classes which I TA'd or LA'd for. I just completed my four year Bachelor's Degree in Physics from Rochester Institute of Technology and have focused on Physics Education during my time at RIT.

It is time to understand what is going on in math class.

I have had teaching responsibilities since I began graduate school. At SUNY at Buffalo, I was an assistant for courses in calculus of a single variable, multivariable calculus, and linear algebra; at SUNY at Brockport, I was the instructor of a course in basic algebra. Currently, I am a graduate student and adjunct instructor at Binghamton University. I have taught calculus of a single variable - both differential calculus and integral calculus, linear algebra, and a course for liberal arts majors. I have also tutored students in probability and number theory. Throughout these experiences, I have gained an appreciation for the teaching of mathematics. It is an art that is intended to attract, even captivate, the attention and imagination of students. Students see my excitement about teaching. Most find my enthusiasm infectious.
I understand that many students seeking tuto ... read more

I believe that the best way to learn anything is to actually do it and have it be relevant to your experiences. That is why I strive to make science and math come alive for my students so they can see that the things they are learning are really part of their world. It is important for me to constantly assess my student learning and to continually check for understanding. I also realize the need to diversify instruction and assessment in order to reach students. I believe in using every tool available to me in order to help my student achieve their full potential.

A Little Bit About Me...

I firmly believe teaching requires structure. In that regard, the learning process requires a sequences of steps. Firstly, the student must understand the problem to be solved or the skill to be acquired. Secondly, examples are required to show how to approach and solve a prolem. Lastly, overarching concepts can be introduced to unitfy that which is new with that which is already understood. This approach has succesfully trained and kept the interest of all individuals that I have mentored.
As an individual involved in advanced development activities at Eastman Kodak, I had the opportunity to apply my knowledge of science into product development and I also had the opportunity to train other individuals in the workings of a new product as that product became commercialized and a large staff of engineers and technicians were needed for the product's manufacture. A Little Bit About Me...

I tutored for the Sylvan Learning Center in 2010. I tutored all math subjects K-12 and occasionally science. I was most successful teaching High School Physics. I also tutored some kids privately on the side before Sylvan, in 2009 and early 2010. I worked for WordsandNumbers in Baltimore MD right after graduating, in late 2005. I assisted with editing K-12 math educational materials.
I like to explain the concept while drawing pictures or showing some example problems, then have them work through some problems. I'll explain more thoroughly reiterating some key points after the initial exposure, and then try to pick out weaknesses while watching the problem set progress and work on those weak points. I like to encourage the student by pointing out the things they are excelling at.

My philosophy of teaching is based on three principles: Helping students learn, love of my subject matter, and love of life long learning. In graduate school, I was fortunate to have a teaching assistantship in the undergraduate chemistry laboratories. During and after those hectic three hour labs I discovered the joy of seeing the veil of confusion lifted from my undergraduates’ faces. I’ve been gifted with the patience and creativity to discern where the confusion originates and to explain topics in many ways so that any student, who wanted to learn, could learn from me. I saw that I too, would continue to learn from teaching the students—it came full circle.
I leveraged my flexibility, creativity, and training to establish a reputation as a productive research professional in a Rochester, NY industry. I am the co-author of 22 US Patents, the recipient of numerous awards f ... read more

I tend to work well with individuals and small groups, independent of their age - I have worked with everyone from elementary school and below up to adult learners on a factory floor. My main goal is to teach by finding out what the pupil already knows and relating the subject matter to them through the already established knowledge base. Combining this this direct experience with analogy tends to bring what sometimes starts as an incomprehensible subject into the realm of what they already know and have a feel for, making them more comfortable with the subject and better able to grasp the concepts.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a freshman forensic chemistry undergraduate student I was tested out of the general chemsirty courses offered at York College. This being the case I needed to find a way to keep chemistry fresh in my mind till the higher level courses were available to me. A professor suggested that I become a lab assistant for the general chemistry classes. This job included preparing all necessary chemicals as well as working closely with the students and faculty. I helped tutor students in both the lab and classroom. I remained a lab assistant for all four years of my college career and helped train many new lab assistants who were also students.

Between my studies at Roberts Wesleyan College in the liberal arts field, where I earned a bachelors degree, and my studies in math and computational science I have an exceptionally broad knowledge base. My work experience further illustrates this having worked briefly as an English teacher in Prague as well as the various sales and customer service jobs I have had including Verizon Wireless, Wegmans, and Radio Shack.
I love working with people and teaching them about the things that I am passionate about. I am very patient and throughout and I have learned a lot of valuable techniques such as asking the right questions to confirm that the student has learned the lesson as well as planning out what the important points are that I need to cover. I also try to illustrate points using a variety of learning styles that over time I can customize to individual students.

As a past student of a prestigious liberal arts school, I am certainly skilled in my field. I have earned a bachelor’s degree in Physics and Mathematics and a master's degree in Physics, a process that has granted me a great deal of knowledge in the fields of math and science. During my term there, I earned two institutional awards for my excellence in physics, as well as membership in both the national physics and mathematics honor society. While in school, I also served as a teaching assistant, recitation aid, and tutor for introductory physics courses; this has afforded me much insight in addressing the questions and facilitating the learning of my students.
