Native English/Japanese Speaker looking for learners!

I have had a period of 7+ years studying and living in a native Japanese-speaking environment. I have learned a variety of dialects and have also worked as an interpreter in a Japanese town hall office. I also have ESL (English as a second language) teaching experience working with everyone ranging from youth to adults teaching them English in both a casual and classroom style throughout my time in Japan.
I like to keep things informal, people want to learn a language in order to speak and communicate rather than learn cold informal grammatical points. I know learning grammar is an essential building block to the language learning process, but know that verbal communication along with open discussion is a must in any learning environment.

A Little Bit About Me...

My personal teaching philosophy is that there is no teaching without learning. Most classroom studies are at least partly removed from their intended application, for reasons of assuring comprehensive competency and because of the educational structure, i.e. attending school comes in advance of and separately from applying one’s knowledge. However, learning a language,for example and especially while living in it has both a need for constant practice and occasion for immediate application. The broader linguistic community has thusly prioritized practical teaching methods, of which I wish to avail myself.

I am a recent graduate of Oberlin College, a school known for producing "lifelong learners". As a Neuroscience major, I studied many areas of science, including biology and chemistry, but am also proficient in English and Art. I have previously been an assistant camp teacher in early childhood education, but I have also taught animation techniques to children ages 8-14 in a summer internship position with the National Children's Museum in Washington, DC.
