My comments on tutoring Continuing Education : I assume this topic covers areas needed in order to successfully enter an institute of higher learning, and/or to successfully pass Developmental level college courses. Having taught GED preparation (and coordinating a GED program I built from the ground up) for 17 years, I've come to realize the subject areas/levels needed to pass the above exam are the same ones needed to score well on, for instance, Sinclair's Accuplacer test. How well my students score(d) on their individual GED subject exams directly correlated to how well they did on the Accuplacer, which indicates college readiness & if/how many of three levels of Developmental courses may be required in reading comprehension, writing, and math. For instance, a student that scored a 410-440 on the GED math exam would make the "cut", but still have to take as many as three DEV Math classes. However, someone with a GED math score in the 440-480 range may only need two, a 490-540 scorer will probably still need one DEV, and a student scoring over a 550 would most likely not have to take any DEVs, and go straight into college math. The process is similar for Accuplacer's Reading (correlates with GED's rdg., science & soc. st.s scores) and Writing placement tests (unlike the GED, there's no combo. score of essay + multiple choice grammar questions, it's multiple choice only on the Accuplacer). Having explained the above, I would prepare a student attempting to enter college, especially one who's been away from school for awhile, by using much of the same basic curriculum I use for GED preparation. My GED students always did/do score so much better on college entry exams than someone WITH a high school diploma that's been away from school/studies for a couple years or decades!

Individualized/personalized... After each class/session my mind is always going through, "How can I better teach/reach that student?" In addition to my many years of experience teaching a myriad of subjects, I can provide you with additional, tailor-made, book lists, & free websites/APPs (and show you how to access them, if need be)... My current BCI/FBI background checks are on file with the state of Ohio as of 02/14/2012, and my current teaching license is on file and online with the Ohio Dept. of Education.

My teahing style is to include each student in the process of learning. I do this by getting to know their strengths and weaknesses. My students are aware of their individual responsibility and I develop their desire for success by encouraging them to seek out this knowledge. I use a variety of hands-on lessons that makes understanding a concept or a skill easier due to the knowledge they already possess. Throughout my professional relationships I have allowed for "safe" failure so that the sudent is aware when they achieve success. This combination makes the student secure in their abilities. Each student requires a constructive academic program coupled with diversity of learning environments; I provide this type of teaching.
Raised in a disadvantaged social-economic environment, I sought success by joining the military; traveling and learning about the world. Upon my retirement I ... read more

My education includes degrees in Biology, Environmental Science, and Education. Some of my coursework included botany, zoology, chemistry, physics, ecology, scientific methods and writing. As an environmental consultant for the past 23 years, I’ve conducted scientific studies, written reports, managed a team, and worked with the public. I've also taught science at the college-level. Two favorite classes were “Spring Flora” and “Trees and Shrubs”. Both were freshman courses that introduced mostly non-science majors to their first experience with the natural sciences. Overall, I'm enthusiastic about teaching and believe that my real-life experience provides a unique learning opportunity.
I love science and love to teach! I believe that teaching is an intentional effort. It’s not just about presenting information, but also about motivating. I set high standards, but also emphasize tha ... read more

For the past 10 years I have been teaching a wide variety of students ranging in age from their 80’s to 8. I obtained my BS in Information Technology which gives me a vast knowledge of computer applications, networking, and technical communications. I have also worked in a higher academic institution and have extensive knowledge of grammatical skills as well as different formats for composing research papers. I also possess a high level of patience and enthusiasm which I feels helps with the education process.
I like to teach using a hands-on approach. I believe the best way to learn is to do or at least attempt to do. I really find satisfaction when I see the “light bulb” go off and there is a glimmer if understanding in the eyes of my pupil.

My teaching style is customized to each student's needs. Because all students have different learning styles my instructions are patterned to maximize that student's particular style. After evaluating each student with a baseline test, goals and objectives based on the state's/district's curriculum are determined. My style is setting high but realistic expectations with rigorous assignments. I also try to have an overdose of encouragement and make the learning session fun time for students.
Teaching has been my last career change. My prior experience has been in the field of manufacturing, maintenance engineering services and construction management. This diversified background was instrumental in equipping me to acquire a technology education certificate in three states (NY, OH, NJ) I am equipped to tutor elementary students in math, the physical sciences and language arts. I am an adaptable teacher. If I see that something is not getting through I will try a new angle to get the point across and am not afraid to try something to reach the students. No two people learn exactly the same way so one needs to adjust for the learner. Interactive learning is beneficial and usually helps keep students more focused and excited about the learning process. I like the challenge of helping others and enjoy seeing when they "get it" and are ready to move on.
I have a number of education courses completed from UD since I had started in the Elementary Education program there. As a Youth Minister I taught all age levels from sixth grade to seniors. I also taught training sessions for my adult volunteers. As a Sales Consultant part of my responsibilities was teaching program materials informational sessions to adults. A Little Bit About Me...

I received an honors degree from Fairborn High School and Wright State University. Education has always been very important to me. While attending WSU for fine arts, I was reminded of my passion for teaching and decided to also acquire my art education certification. During my education program, I was placed in Xenia High School. I was also selected by the art education advisor as one of four students to take part in an innovative teaching class where I learned how to use art and music to teach science and math. I helped design and co-teach an art/math/music lesson to a 6th grade math class in Dayton Public Schools.
I understand that some children respond to teaching styles that others do not. I am patient and encouraging. I am trained to use innovative teaching techniques to help students better understand and remember challenging subjects. My fine art background allows me ... read more
