A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is very interactive. I like to begin a tutoring session by helping the student set a goal for the session. We then begin work on the material. During the session I encourage the student's learning by asking open-ended questions to encourage critical thinking. With writing assignments, the pen is always in the student's hand and, with guidance, the student makes choices about his or her writing. I use a method I call guided discovery, which encourages students to think in depth about their subject, discovering new methods and information with guidance from me.

English and Writing CAN be Fun!

The collaborative learning approach, where students are encouraged to discuss what and how they're learning, is most effective. Students tend to engage much better with course material when the instructor has discussions with them, as opposed to lecturing at them.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. My major was English Literature, with a double minor in French Language and Communications. I am also a certified composition peer tutor, assisting students in Composition I, Composition II, and graduate level papers. I have also written procedural instructions for positions. My comments on tutoring Shakespeare : I have been a state-certified teacher of English and French for 18 years.

My teaching style...? I do not have only one; part of the point of tutoring is the ability to truly tailor styles/strategies to individuals or small groups. I must say that I am the funniest person I know, and I crack myself up all the time. Humor is always one of my favorite/best strategies.
