I have been involved with sign language for six years now. I took two years in high school and two semesters in college. I also tutored four students for a year in the basics of sign. Hello, My name is Hazel Sherin and I am currently a Freshman at The New School. As a high school student I decided instead of taking a foreign language to take sign language as an alternative. Prior to taking ASL 1, I was completely unaware of Deaf Culture and The Deaf community. In learning some of the history and attending Deaf events, I rapidly fell in love with the language. Unfortunately, I only reached ASL 3, as I only started taking it as a Sophomore. Since then I have taken one ASL 2 course in college just as a review because that is all that is offered at my school. I do enjoy helping anyone write a well developed and educated paper on the topic at hand. My specific style of teaching, especially for the 8th grade, is to read the current book being used, and then present my lesson with lecture, interactive discussion and comprehension, based on the age and grade of the student. I like to put the lesson into terms that the age group can relate to, and then assign a memory technique that will teach the students to recall the proper answer by using the examples we have discussed in class.
