I have been tutoring for eight years now. Two of those years, I spent running a tutoring program at a community organization for students in grades K-8. I have also tutored high school and college students. I have a Vocational certificate in Business and Management Informations Systems. I am also certified in TEFL(Teaching English as a Foreign Language). All of the students that I have tutored have all made immense progress within a short period of time.

I have two bachelor degrees, one in computer science, the other in mathematics with a type 09 cert (6-12). I belong to Mensa and the NCTM, and have excellent English and decent Spanish speaking and writing skills. I have taught and tutored in mathematics and computer science for quite awhile, and I earned a 95% on my PSAT and a 32 on my ACT. Generally, I'm a constructivist, and I believe the best method of tutoring is providing a completely individuated scaffold for any student. While I was raised in old-school education, I believe that some of the newer techniques of education through hands-on, the use of digital technology, and through writing across the curriculum are effective for many students.

I earned a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington, where I tutored for 2 years in the subjects of physics, calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, engineering mechanics and thermodynamics. In addition to my technical background, I studied English and liberal arts for 2 years and wrote fiction for my college magazine. Over the past 2 years I have worked as a volunteer tutor with students in Chicago ranging from 7th grade through college, teaching English, mathematics and science. I am an experienced engineer and technician, and can readily communicate the relevance of math and science to students at all levels. I am currently pursuing a graduate degree in engineering. I like working with grade-school students, but I like best a variety of teaching situations. That for me truly represents the challange of teaching. Only a diversity of students can bring learning to itself, reveal the demands of cognition for what they are. As a philosophy PhD this interests me very much. I have been teaching for 25 years. I began as a high-school teacher, taught grade school and special education, and then spent 20 years as a university professor of English and philosophy.
