I also taught an experiential counseling microskills course to students enrolled in a school counseling program. I have also provided mentorship for several counseling trainees over the last several years. I feel confident I could provide excellent tutoring services in statistics as I took numerous graduate level courses in statistics and research design. Moreover, given my level of education I believe I could provide more general tutoring services in other fields such as mathematics, english and science.

I love teaching and working with students of all ages. I have tutored students from various background and abilities. I believe in students being active participants in their learning process through the use of hands-on activities and discovery lessons. My desire is to change student perception of math and create a welcoming learning environment for all of my students.
I have always wanted to be a teacher and share my love and understanding of mathematics with everyone. In May of 2000, I was inducted into the National Mathematics Honor Society. I have taught high school math for eight years. The courses I taught ranged from basic Algebra 1 all the way to AP Calculus. I have a BS in Elementary Education and just completed my sixth year of teaching at the elementary level. I have experience teaching grades 2, 3 and 4, and I'm comfortable tutoring students in all aspects of the elementary curriculum up through grade 8. While in college, I tutored fellow college students for two years in biology, English and math, and I was named Outstanding Tutor in my second year.
I believe that all children are capable of learning--the trick is to figure out each child's individual style. I believe strongly in developing positive relationships with my students, and the rapport I have with them in the classroom or while tutoring has aided their successes. I tend to adjust my methods as I learn more about my students, and my students have experienced quite a bit of success in the past.

I love working with children. I've taught acting at the Durham Arts Council for three years. The duties from that position included directing students in performances which I helped them create. The plays were written around themes chosen by the camp director. So, in essence, the children and I would research those themes and develop stories which I would then turn into plays using my expertise. Those plays would be performed every two weeks for the entire summer. I was responsible for preparing three classes for this project simultaneously.

A Little Bit About Me...

In the beginning being a doctor was all that I desired. Helping others, tending to their wounds and etc was my dream. It wasn't until I had the honor of tutoring others that I realized, my passion to teach was equally as strong as my passion for medicine. I feel no child is incapable of learning. As long as one remembers that everyone is different, and that each person brings a different amount of prior knowledge with them. By bearing that in mind it allows you the ability to adjust and when working with children a teacher must know how to adjust so that each child is reached. I love education, and I love assisting others in reaching their potential.
During my time as an undergraduate I was blessed with the opportunity of tutoring others. I have earned one bachelor degree, BS in Biology with and emphasis in genetics. Along with my bachelors I have obtained two minors as well, one c ... read more

I love being able to work with students in a smaller setting. I think math is made more difficult because it can be taught several ways. Working with children on a more personal level allows me to better relate the subject to something meaningful to the child. My goal is to do my best to educate everyone, whether they are a child or an adult. I will teach to the student's needs using the Socratic Method.
I recently graduated from Purdue University with my BS in math and math education. While studying at Purdue, I was able to teach math at a college level, as well as tutor students of various strengths. Upon graduation, I taught high school math in Knox, Indiana where I had the experience of teaching several classes of diverse learners.

My teaching style can best be described as entertaining, insightful, dedicated, flexible and individually-oriented. I feel that for any individual who chooses to learn something new, the biggest key to their success is motivation and their personal interest in what they are looking to learn. I also recognize that many students (especially young learners) are guided to study various lessons/fields by parents/educators and they need to find what they are being guided to study interesting in some way. I work to create a welcoming rapport with students and then, using my knowledge of the study being taught along with paying close attention to the desires and needs of a student, create a lesson that student finds interesting and therefore become drawn to. I like to try to make all my lessons exciting and to always end with the student feeling good about whatever they may have learned. As ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to teach and I get excited when I help a student whose performance was bad before I started teaching him/her but significantly improved after I started teaching them. It is very enjoyable for me and currently I just do it voluntarily for part-time. However, the best thing I like about teaching is that you are shaping the future of young children and helping them excel in areas in which they are struggling.
I have always been interested in teaching. I have taught for a couple of months as a full-time teacher in Franklin County's Middle School. I have been doing part-time voluntary tutoring for the last three years teaching math, physics, chemistry, computers, and foreign language. I also participate in National Engineer's Week conducted by IBM in which engineers go to different middle and high schools and teach kids about the latest technology fields in engineering, and the ... read more

I will graduate from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Engineering Business. I have taken very high levels of mathematics, including Single and Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Probability. I have experience tutoring middle school students in Algebra all the way up to tutoring my fellow classmate in Differential Equations.
My favorite experience with tutoring was teaching algebra to 8th graders. I tried to take them through basic examples that thoroughly teach the overarching concept and then have them take that concept and apply it to examples with added functionality. I have found this works best because it pushes the kids to really learn the concepts.

I have a lot of experience working with all ages of children. As a teacher, I try to maintain a respectful but friendly dialogue with the student. Especially as a tutor, I want to be able to have an open and honest dialogue with the kid about the work. I am happy always to talk about why certain work is included in the curriculum. If a child is struggling, I know that an initial response is to quit. To assert that certain work is worthless or of no meaning in their life. I would devote a lot of energy to challenging that assertion. By grounding the lessons of the day in the larger context of the world, I would lead the individual to a recognition of the intrinsic value of schoolwork.

I learned through visual aid. So, I guess I would lean towards this style of teaching. However, if a student learns better with audio aid then I would be willing to combine the two methods to better educate the student. My goal is to provide the best education possible and to suceed in that is to have great communication and alittle fun doing the work that is expected.
I have not taught anyone or tutored anyone for money. However, I would like to have the oppitunity to be able to tutor children or young adults on their way of the journey of life. I too was tutored going through school and not just once. I attended Sylvin Learning Center every other year since sixth grade. It helped me understand the areas that I didnt and excel in the areas I did. I would like to give thas opportunity to someone else.

A Little Bit About Me...

Learning is an incredibly individual phenomenon. I believe patience and creativity are essential to helping children learn. A concept can be explained in many different ways and modalities and the key is to find which styles of learning are best suited to your child. With support and encouragement, I will help your child gain confidence by building upon their strengths and by presenting topics with which they have more difficulty in a way that best complements the way in which they learn.
As the oldest of three children, I have informally tutored for many years. While pursuing my undergraduate degree, I worked with a community college student and aided him in passing his Algebra course. My interests in education are diverse. I have a liberal arts degree which drew heavily upon my writing skills. Additionally, I was completing my prerequisites for medical school which require ... read more

First and foremost, I believe it is important to establish a trusting relationship with those you teach. Throughout my experiences in the field of education, I have found the most fruitful of those relationships to be those in which I was able to work with a student or group of students regularly over an extended period of time to develop a routine and a strong relationship in which great amounts of learning and understanding could be accomplished. Although many people experience obstacles in learning Mathematics, I believe that by presenting multiple ways to approach a problem, every student can find a method that works for them. Every student should be allowed the resources and opportunity to realize that they CAN achieve their goals. I am here to help students who have had difficulty with Math in the past to succeed, and feel confident in both their abilities in Math, and in life. ... read more
