I like to get to know the child and form a friendship with him or her. Once we develop a rapport it is easier for them to open up to me. When the comfort level is established we then develop a mutual-learning relationship, as I can learn from the student just as much as he or she can learn from me.

I love to teach and I get excited when I help a student whose performance was bad before I started teaching him/her but significantly improved after I started teaching them. It is very enjoyable for me and currently I just do it voluntarily for part-time. For the past two years, I was the high school English teacher in a small, rural Alaskan village located on the Yukon River. This teaching position was very challenging--I had to teach several subjects, such as English, social studies, geography, art, keyboarding, drama, journalism, and digital photography. I also believe that most people are smart. i've had high school students who read at a 3rd grade level--but they were smart when addressing subjects of interest to them. I teach by starting with the familiar--what students understand--and then buiding on it. I have done student teaching at the high school level in Math, specifically, Geometry and Trigonometry. I created innovative new ways to use the materials on hand to reawaken students' natural mathematical curiosity and to exemplify the concepts of the courses. I have always had an interest in English, writing, and Communications. I have tutored students in both English, reading, and writing. In my undergraduate program I earned a BA in English and spent time working as a writer and Sports Editor for my college newspaper, worked as an intern at a newspaper, and worked in Public Relations as Communications Manager for a nonprofit organization.
I believe that any child can learn and that we all have various learning styles. We just have to find the style that is best for optimum learning. Some of us are visual learners and some are auditory learners, and many of us learn with a combination of styles.
