In my experience, the approach that works best with all ages is to form a cooperative bond to make the effort more a “we” project than a “you-must-do-this” one. We set goals to be achieved step-by-step, so that the student learns about the process of studying, rather than simply making the “grade.” In general, I follow the steps, including “preview- view- review,” outlined in my book, How to Do Your Best on Tests.
