If you want something bad enough, you must fight for it.

I am patient but firm. If a student isn't willing to put in a 100% effort then I will not waste my time. I have always gotten exemplary grades from anyone I've tutored. I teach each student differently, some are more visual, or auditory, or hands-on, and I adjust my methods to better benefit my students. Bottom line: I will work hard for you, and I expect you to work hard for you too.
I have always written, and I have always loved doing it. The same goes for reading. I have tutored various class mates through college, and have also worked at a children's enrichment center (I am currently employed there) where I teach basic reading and writing. I am also currently editing a friends novel. I made the Dean's list two years in a row, graduated with the two highest literary awards under my belt, and I have been published in the Equinox and In My Lifetime.

I believe in engaging the students in their learning. In order to avoid boredom and to get students active in their learning, they need to move, collaborate, and have discussions and Socratic Circles to debate and argue their ideas in a reasonable way to prepare them for what goes beyond grade school. Students should be involved in projects that involve creation, and thinking outside of the box. We should be teaching our students to use digital tools in order to take an interest in learning outside of the classroom. And because of so much technology, students have information at their fingertips, which means instead of memorization and recall questions, we should have students explain what they have learned through a variety of methods using a variety of research. Also as teachers, we should be guides to the students as they navigate through the information overload and prepare to e ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to teach children and find it both a challenge as well as an inspiration. When teaching I find it necessary to determine the learning styles of each student as well as areas of interest. Once these have been determined it is much easier to determine the areas of academic needs and teach according to how they best learn. Learning should not be seen as a chore but rather as an opportunity to succeed in life. Whenever possible I include technology into the curriculum to enhance teaching. If teaching a large class it may be necessary to break into small groups to focus on the needs of certain students while providing enrichment activities for others. Positive reinforcement is the key to a student becoming more confident.
During the last twelve years I have worked within the public school system in both Arkansas and Florida. Between 1998 and 2000 I worked as a substitute f ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is whatever best fits the student. When working one on one with a student I practice a few different methods of teaching and whichever one they feel the most comfortable with and I receive the most attentiveness from, is the one that I continue to use. For example, some students prefer that you walk them through a lesson, go over a few practice problems and then let them work on assignments, knowing that they have you to assist them when needed. Others might want to jump into the assignment and when a question arises, they ask you to refer to the lesson to help them find the solution.
I have earned my Master's and Bachelors and am currently seeking my PHD. I enjoy learning and sharing knowledge with others. My business degrees, and over 10 years of professional experience in the workforce, I am a confident instructor in Mathematics, English and Communications ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Children are our future. I believe that all children have something wonderful to offer the community. Learning is not always easy for children, I take the time to find out the strengths and weakness they my have, I find out what their interest are, this is a great tool for teaching children something they may be struggling in, an I strive to provide a safe and fun environment for them to learn in. I love working with children, this is a gift, I learn as much from them and they learn from me. I have worked with children of all backgrounds and I have been the teacher over past years that are blessed with the children that have learning, behavioral or special needs such as RAD, ADHD, ADD, and various forms of Autism. It takes a special person to work with children, I am patient, very observant, and I am always trying to find the best way each child can learn. I have been awarded for the en ... read more

Beginning as a teacher assistant while earning a Bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri, I have helped others learn the tenets of writing for mass consumption. I have worked as a writer or editor in newspapers and for web sites the past 25 years, offering others assistance in rewriting or reorganizing their work to better conform for publication. I taught an introductory writing course for UALR's journalism school, where I put students through daily writing exercises and helped teach them the standard pyramid news writing format.
I enjoy helping others realize they have the ability to tell a compelling story through words. I am available to help your child find their voice through the written word. With patience and consideration of their individual backgrounds and talents, I believe I can help provide them journalistic guidelines that will enable them to w ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I started teaching Music in 1984. I taught part-time, temporary while pursuing education goals and working as a professional musician. In 1998 I became an adult educator, and in the following nine years I taught GED, Workforce, Computer and ESL. I learned to speak Spanish from some of my ESL students. Today I run a new program called Bachillerato de las Americas en Arkansas, comprised of curricula obtained from Kingston, Jamaica and Heredia, Costa Rica. I enjoy teaching all age levels.
I consider myself a facilitator, not an authoritarian. I ascribe to the principles set forth by Malcolm Knowels and Benjamin Bloom. I rely on the strength and motivation of the student. I hesitate to call myself "teacher." I think I serve better as a guide which, hopefully, leads his client not just to a more enlightend place, but also to the place the client wants to be, or had in mind in the fir ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have earned a BS in Chemistry and a minor in Math. I am currently working as a chemist, so I have kept up with all the new studies that are taking place right now. I have tutored all through High School, College and thereafter. I have a real passion for learning math, all sciences, and history. I hope I can pass this respect for these studies on to everyone I teach.
I believe we all learn in different ways, and I am always open minded in finding the best way for that student I am working with at that time. I believe everyone can achieve the highest of goals if we all strive for that success and find out a way to get there. However, most of all I hope I can leave a feeling of respect for the studies and for the people around us.

My experience includes private applied instruction in Voice, Piano, and Drama; substitute classroom instruction for various subjects at both elementary and secondary levels; and one-on-one aide work with special needs students. Since graduating with my Bachelor's of Music: Composition from the University of Redlands in 2006 (after only five semesters of residence), I have passionately pursued the transformative labor of education, particularly as concerns youth. My greatest areas of expertise are Music, Drama, and English.
I tailor my approach to instruction to meet individual needs. Ideally, all instruction (but especially personal tutoring) will conform itself to the needs of every student. While each mind is unique, encouragement and challenge cultivate excellence impartially; in light of this, I strive to create an environment that fosters excellence. I earned my B.A. in English Literature from the University of Arkansas in 2004. While enrolled in Spanish classes, I volunteered with the Amigos Program. I was assigned to students whose parents spoke little or no English and were unable to help with homework. I helped students practice for spelling tests and improve their reading skills. In my work as a recruiter, I saw poorly written resumes and implemented a program to teach basic spelling and grammar skills. The program resulted in a greater number of applicants being hired by my clients.
My personal approach to learning is to instill confidence by assuring every student that he or she is smart, and capable of doing well at anything they set their mind to. Good spelling, grammar, and composition skills can be achieved by anyone; and will set students apart by providing the confidence to succeed both as a student, and throug ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a strong constructivist teaching style: I do my best to connect a student's prior knowledge and experiences to new knowledge in order to build on his or her experience, thereby creating a foundation for intrinsic learning. My reading lessons are technically rigorous, but are supplemented with frequent discussion to check for understanding. I abide by the principle "first accuracy, then speed." In all subjects, I strive for student mastery and maximum comprehension.
While enrolled in the teacher certification program with Hendrix College, I mentored/tutored an eighth grader in various subjects. I enjoyed the one-on-one experience thoroughly and quickly returned to tutoring at Arkansas School for the Blind. During my three years of employment with ASB, I improved ACTAAP reading scores of two students with reading/learning impairments after one year of tutoring sessions f ... read more

With my bachelors degree in Business Administration, I have gained many skills. I have a great understanding of writing and reading, with experience in professional essays, research papers, and checking for grammatical errors. Over the past 10 years, I have had the privilege of providing child care for all ages of children, through which I have been able to teach and tutor the subjects they were learning in school at the time of care.
I currently provide care for 6 children (3 different families) which range in age from 14 months to 9 years old, one of which is autistic. I love working with all ages of children, and understand that each child is different in their style of learning. It takes a lot of patience and understanding, especially with children that have special needs. My goal is to greatly increase the knowledge of the student in order for them to succeed in their educatio ... read more
