I graduated with a degree in earth science education in 1995. I worked for several years as a substitute teacher and then returned to college to gain biology certification. I worked at a local high school for five years teaching seventh grade science and senior high general science. For the last six years I have worked for a head start program. My teaching style is more student centered. I believe that involving the students with hands on activities allows them to grasp and understand certain topics easier. Especially in a science classroom where we are studying intangible topics, like the core of the earth, or the stars, or the atmosphere, students may have difficulties understanding these ideas from a strictly lecture based approach to educating. Also I understand that schools are becoming more and more diverse regarding the student body population. This fact means that it is important for me to use multiple types of assessment and teaching methods in the classroom.

A Little Bit About Me...

Because of my experience in teaching my own children, I have discovered that no child is too young to learn. Often people will not consider an infant or toddler a "functioning human being" until the child can speak. This is so inaccurate! I taught one of my daughters to read at age four. My teaching style is to engage the student on a personal level through cheerful conversation and sharing of interests, then to assess learning styles, strengths, and challenges.
