My comments on tutoring ACT : I took prep classes for this test, but did the majority of studying alone. I took the test twice. The first I went in almost cold and got a 31, the second time with more studying I got a 34. 34 on Writing, 35 on Math, 36 on Reading, 32 on Science and a 9 on the Essay. From all of my preparation I know how to break down the test and explain the thinking behind scoring well.

Teaching new concepts, practice applying the new material, review, and more practice of the material to solidify the concepts.
I have helped my classmates and have had one official student as of this summer. However, I have learned how to explain concepts so that students dont just memorize, they will gain a thought process and applicable knowledge that will enable them to solve even the most complex problems. Having this mentality of preparation and success will being them to reach their goals.

My teaching style is centered around full-filling the needs of student, especially in a tutor setting. Being focused and showing a genuine care and consideration for the student shows them that you not only respect them but want them to be successful. Positive re-inforcement is a main focus of mine and it has proven successful in the previous students I have worked one-on-one with. The best teaching style in my opinion, explains how to research, plan and write essays, gives students time to practice these skills in class, and ensures students get feedback on how well they have done on each sub-skill. Students learn skills by using them in a realistic, subject-specific context, and in a combined way. So they might use other skills taught before such as note taking, highlighting, all in context. The purpose of the skills are stressed, students are taught not just what to do and how, but also why. The students then reflect on how well they used the skills, what gains they were getting and so on, and then they action plan for improvement.
