Education is enlightening, enjoyable, and energizing!

I prefer interactive teaching, including audio, visual, and verbal.
I returned to school at the age of 47 to get my degree in history. My experience consists of tutoring from 1 - 60 students (in the same hour), teaching at Greenville Technical College, and creating my own tutoring service. I deeply enjoy all kinds of history and have a passion for teaching others. From my very first job (selling papers at the age of 11), I have used teaching as the medium for interacting with people.

Wildly Experienced Writing and All-Around English Tutor

Relaxed but exacting.
I have tutored writing at the college level since 1985 when I finished a formal course in tutoring methods. Since then, I have tutored writing and other subjects for people as young as 12 through college-age. For 15 years, I also taught college writing courses including basic writing, English composition, research composition, creative writing, and advanced poetry writing. I am the recipient of a Nation/Discovery award for poetry, and my poems have appeared in many literary magazines and some anthologies. I recently put out a novel. Additionally, I scored 198 out of 200 on the literature Praxis examination, which is a national teacher certification exam. In addition to teaching writing, I ran an interdisciplinary learning center for 11 years. There, I hired, trained and supervised tutors in many disciplines--usually at least 90 per semester. Education, teaching in particular, gives individuals the opportunity to give back what they have received. It is communication on a broader level than just simply putting forth information to whomever chooses to accept it. I started my career in education before I set foot on a college campus, through a peer-tutoring program in my high school. This experience allowed me to work with severely disabled peers learning functional skills for independence. Since then I have worked as an aide in emotional/behavior and multiple-disability middle school classrooms, as well as LD-resource, ED self contained and SC occupational diploma program. In addition I have earned a degree of distinction with the National Forensic League, been name a scholar-athlete in South Carolina and a host of other accolades in scholarship. I have experienced both urban and suburban school settings and have had inc ... read more

Literature is one of my top subjects! The enjoyment and analysis of any work of literature comes not only from close inspection, but also by dissecting the freebie interpretations of other readerss. On top of, of course, casual reading. Waffled between this and my chosen major of Creative Writing, and even took extra courses on the subject that did not count towards my degree. All major Lits covered by all major schools, world to specific countries, eras.

I try to approach client's problems on a case by case nature: they have a particularly hard to write paper or a class that just isn't working for them, and I will try to work closely with them to find solutions. I will not write a client's paper or perform any creative work for them, but I will edit or provide guidance as needed. While there are no shortcuts to an A, I will share what has worked for me and others in the real world.
I'm a recent college graduate from NC State, with a degree in Creative Writing. However, the CW course instilled in me knowledge in a variety of fields from film to philosophy, and as a requirement of modern education made me more than just fluent in the language of computers. I'm a would-be author, and a writer of short stories, and have won an honorable mention in a few poetry contests. In college I was frequently asked by friends in less libera ... read more

I have been doing one-on-one care with individuals with mental/physical disabilities for the past year and a half working for the Arc of NC. What I enjoy most about working with children and adults in tutoring is helping them to realize the skills and abilities they have. In my teaching, I like to encourage students and let them learn, believing that each person is their own best teacher and that the real progress is the progress you make on your own. Of course, I love to work closely with my students, but even more than that, I love helping them see that they truly have the power to make anything happen. I think that tutoring gives a great opportunity to student and teacher alike to learn not only in the subjects in which they study, but to learn what core talents and skills a person has.
At St. Andrews Presbyterian College, I enjoyed helping fellow classmates write essays and found that my skills in English were immensely useful in all classes. I took a job working at the school library and was paid to help students ... read more
