I am a strong believer in teaching a student how to learn. By that I mean, students not only need to know a specific subject matter but also how to aquire and use knowledge. My background is mostly in math and it is what I enjoy teaching the most. I like to use manipulatives to teach. I think students learn better if they have a "hands-on" approach.

I have been tutoring and teaching for many years now. I started out on a small-scale in high school, without any experience, doing community service hours tutoring children at the TN Baptist Home. While I was studying for my undergraduate degree, I did scholarship hours doing private tutoring in English for International Students. I had so much fun I decided to get my Master's in English so that I could become a teacher. While in graduate school I came to know a local community center where I have been teaching now for quite a few years. I feel that I can relate to children because I am also a child at heart. I believe in constant verbal quizzing and repitition as a means to develop the child's ability to retain knowledge and call it forth at will. I have learned from past work experiences that all people learn differently be it either visual, kinetic (hands-on), or verbal (by listening). By learning the child's learning type you can tell which method appeals to them and can create a learning environment to encourage their growth at a faster rate.
