My comments on tutoring American History : I am personally interested in American History and love to teach the subject.

I believe in meeting a student at whatever level he or she is ready to work. I am friendly and like to develop a personal relationship with my students in order to know how to serve them better. I use technology as appropriate.
I began my career teaching music to students in grades K-8. I have always loved the Special Needs students and thus chose to pursue my Master's degree in the Special Education field. My first Special Ed. assignment was for ADHD and LD students in 7th grade Math and Language Arts. From there I have progressed to being the Lead teacher in inclusion settings as both the regular education teacher and the special education teacher. I have always emphasized the immeasurable distinction between education and schooling. Although the two are not necessarily mutually exclusive, in our era they are more and more. I strive to draw a student into a fascination with learning. If that occurs, then education is a fait accompli.

I have 30 years experience in Elementary Education. I have taught grades 2-8 in a self-contained and block scheduled school. I served as Asst. Principal for 2 years and then moved to a district coordinator's job emphasizing curriculum. I have designed standardized tests for my district using Tennessee's new curriculum standards. I have training in the Balanced Literacy program in which the word study, reading objectives, and writers' workshop are combined in a one and a half hour block of student driven, teacher facilitated activities. These are ultimately shared in a whole group and or one on one setting. When tutoring, I do a very brief mini lesson on the objective and we go immediatley into the task at hand with instant feedback and adaptation between the reader or writer and myself as we progress through the lesson. If the student is hung on vowel digraphs, we stop and examine those and do word work with several examples. My next choices for them to read would have more vowel digraphs.
