I enjoy seeing children discover the world around them in their own ways. Therefore, I teach the importance of working things out until you understand it for yourself. Children will meet and often surpass any goal that is given to them if you show that you believe in them. I use a hands-on approach, as much as possible, with a problem-solving emphasis. I firmly believe that a child remembers things more if he is able to work it out for himself. As a result, I take more of a mentoring position the older the child is. My college studies have been in a variety of fields with the most concentration in the arts and social sciences. At the University Center for Developmental Disabilities I have gained one-on-one experience with children with autism and have learned and employed several techniques used in the Operant Conditioning model. As a Teacher Assistant, I have the responsibilities of setting goals, creating objectives for weekly sessions, and tracking and recording weekly progress. Such goals include, increasing expressive communication, decreasing specific inappropriate behaviors unique to each child, and improving academic skills such as reading, mathematics, and problem solving.
