I prefer sitting at the student's elbow, with the assigned work in between us, focusing on it together. I talk about "it" rather than "you" to avoid making the student self-conscious. Writing can always be improved, and each student has areas of strength and weakness. I try to pick one area that needs the most attention, and focus on it. When there is significant improvement, I move on to the next area of weakness. Pointing out all of a student's mistakes and weaknesses at once drains morale, and that is counterproductive. Working on one area at a time keeps the student from being overwhelmed. I like to have the student read out loud to me, so that we can both see what needs improvement. I also point out what was done correctly to boost confidence. Goals are important, as well as establishing a time frame for achieving them.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that all children learn differently. I do not have a specific way of teaching because I get to know my students and help them learn depending on their abilities and learning style. I do however believe in each student learning to do things on their own—I am their tutor, not someone to do their homework for them. I believe in constantly practicing until the concepts are grasped. I enjoy working with children and helping them discover their individual learning style. I believe all children can learn but that we each have our individual strengths. As a former English major and editing minor at Brigham Young University I helped many students write and edit research and English papers. Along the way I also had the opportunity to edit an engineering Master's thesis. I have tutored in paper writing in various subjects as well as specifically tutoring in creative writing. I have worked with and on over thirty papers. I work very well one-on-one with students and am able to explain and teach what is necessary for better papers for the present and for the future.
