My comments on tutoring Reading Comprehension : I'll re-read portions of writing I don't understand until the meaning becomes clear; if the writer is a good one, I usually "get it" on the first read. I do enjoy discussing with other readers what the author's point is.

Very informal and conversational. I like to laugh and joke as well as understand things that are challenging, to both pupil and teacher. Repetition with interesting variation, coming at a problem from different angles solidifies concepts and ideas in our heads.
I have a B.S. in Technical Journalism from Iowa State University. I worked on a sales magazine upon graduating until I was drafted into the armed forces, spending four years as a Navy Electronics Technician. On the G.I. Bill I did Television Production coursework at College of San Mateo and entered the Broadcast TV Graduate Program at San Francisco State. I did not complete my Master's degree, but my training and contacts made there led to a 35-year career in television and video editing.

I'm a senior in high school, and I tutor classmates and my younger brother age 11 and his friends. He is in the fifth grade, and it is really easy to tutor him. I was a community college English teacher for 12 years at Vista Community College in Berkeley, CA (now Berkeley City College). I taught in a special program tailored to working adults who had returned to school in order to earn their Associate of Arts degrees. This was not an academically confident population. They required enormous encouragement, personal attention, and coaching. I was very successful in this position because I was willing to talk with students on the phone, meet with them after class, and even respond to their essays at length on cassette tapes--my own idea!
