A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in empowering our students whenever possible. By this I mean allowing the students to be in charge and have control over their own learning by giving students options. I like working with students in small groups, where I mix their levels of ability thus allowing then to learn not only from me, but from each other as well!
I have been teaching for close to fifteen years now, and have had a great deal of experience in working with students from Kindergarten all the up to adult education. This has enabled me to become an extremely well-rounded, adaptable, and flexible educator who is able to wear many hats whenever necessary. I have taught most subject areas and tutored students for SAT/ACT college entrance exams, math, writing, english, Spanish, etc...

I worked as a Math and English Tutor through the after school No Child Left Behind program. I was responsible for reporting to the lead teacher, reporting to parents, generating study materials and lesson plans to help under achieving students develop skills to improve school grades. I am working on my Bachelor degree through Baker college and need six more courses to complete that degree. I carry a present 3.7 grade point average and I am very well versed in computers, English and Math.

I prefer working with African American children. I believe they are usually the most neglected children in the public school systems. I try to work as a mentor and guide children through projects and activties, rather than work as their "guru". I believe all children are gifted they just need the direction and encouragement to steer them through their experiences. I use child centered approaches to teaching by using hands-on activities and project based lessons.
After graduating from DePauw University, my first teaching experience was at Rose Elementary Open School, which is a Detroit Public School. I was a building substitute. Many people have different teaching skills and techniques. I do not believe any technique to educate a child is better than any other technique. Each child learns differently. Understanding the fact that children learn differently is crucial. The teacher must be able to adapt to the child's learning style. I believe I have the ability to use an array of teaching styles to help children. I would enjoy the opportunity to help children learn.
As a student at the University of Detroit Mercy, I worked as a tutor for two years. I helped other students struggling in mathematics and biology classes. Also, my senior year in college I worked as a Teaching Assistant for a Microbiolgy lab. In addition, I did student teaching for a Catholic Middle School.

I worked as an English Tutor for four years at Washtenaw Community College before being asked to join the part-time teaching staff. My class load consisted mostly of Composition I and Technical Writing classes; occasionally I would substitute for Literature courses when needed. In addition to my educational experience, I also have corporate experience working as a Technical Writer/Documentation Specialist in companies such as: EDS, GM, and Consumer Energy.

Here is Some Good Information About Florida Writes Tutoring

The Florida Writing Assessment was implemented in grades 4, 8, and 10 as required by a law passed by the 1990 legislature. Does your student need a tutor? Beginning in 2010, each essay was scored by one rater. In previous years, two raters were used and the scores were averaged. Prior to 2010, a student could have received a half-point score, such as 4.5; whereas since 2010, no half-point scores are possible. Additionally, beginning in 2010, each student within the same grade level was required to write an essay using the same mode of writing (narrative, expository, or persuasive).
