A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in setting goals and working to ensure they are accomplished. In my opinion, learning should never feel like a boring chore. The student should be working hard, but enjoying him or herself in the process, and this is when the most efficient and effective learning occurs. I work to impart certain values in the students I serve, including: fortitude, imagination and pride.
While I earned my bachelor's degree in communication from Loyola, I also worked as an Academic coach for high school students. I spent a year tutoring students for an academic competition that tested all skill areas including, writing, math, history and science. I spent the summer of 2006 working closely with people with disabilities. I perfected my teaching skills through hands-on learning/teaching techniques.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that every person is able to learn, if they want to. You can't make someone learn if they have no interest in it. I try to establish a reason for learning with the student. My first child I tutored is a perfect example. This boy was 14 years old. He really enjoyed carpentry. He hated math because he didn't realize that it would help him with what he loved. With the relation of math to his carpentry he was able to come from a low "D" to a low "B". It worked becasue he was able to mentally visualize and apply it to his carpentry. I feel the other key to his success is that we set the realistic goal of one letter grade of improvement. The extra letter was the icing on the cake.

As a young R.O.T.C cadet, I was very driven to excel in my college education. On my way to becoming a young Army Officer, I earned two bachelor degrees, BA in Communications and BA in Accoutning. My liberal arts educations granted me opportunities to learn and excel in many arenas such as writing, math, science, and the social sciences. I learned the art of effective communication, writing extensive essays and reports, as well as giving many speeches to audiences of various sizes. I also feel very confident in my ability to relay material to others as I was a student ambassador for my college, helped R.O.T.C cadets excel in the classroom, and tutored before and during college. In the area of special education I have taught students from age 3 to 16 with Mental Disabilities for 8 years. Currently I am working as a substitute teacher for the Carlisle Community Schools and Des Moines Public Schools.
My teaching style is that I believe all students can learn but that there are different learning styles and we must match the correct learning style with the student. My teaching style is a mix of traditional and progressive. Traditional because I believe students need a solid foundation of core knowledge to prepare them for future learning. Progressive, because I believe facts should not only be taught in bits and pieces, but should be put into a meaningful context that the student can understand. My area of concentration is math, which can be hard for some students to grasp because of the way they are taught. Memorizing steps alone does not make sense to most students. Math concepts need to be demonstrated from many different angles. This way, a student is more likely to see one they can connect to. Also, problems should be put into relevant terms that interest kids.
