I spent my entire teaching career at Hammondsport Central School in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of New York State. In that time, I taught every level of every grade (7-12). In addition to the basic high school English curriculum, I designed and taught four electives which became a permanent part of the program. I have been an educator for 24 years. I have never thought about doing anything else because I love teaching. First, I believe the teacher has to be passionate and have a true love for what he or she is doing; this is passion, or lack thereof, is evident when interacting with a student. Second, patience is of upmost importance. In my experience, nothing inhibits learning as much as a rushed or pressured feeling when one is trying to learn. Finally, it is critical to find a way for the student to relate to the material in a way they understand. Individualization is an important part of my teaching style. I think it is important to identify what the student needs to work on and present it in a way the student can grasp the concept and enjoy learning. The student has to enjoy learning to succeed.
