I follow Gardner's Theory of Learning Styles, students do not learn in the same way, as a tutor you must look for the approach that is right for the student. Also, working with at risk students, who have experienced failure in traditonal school settings, an educator must work on the negative beliefs of the student, including that the student sees themselves as "dumb" and " not able to learn." One or 2 point increase on a TABE test, needs to be recognized. My teaching style varies with audience. I believe that most students need to first understand what a question is asking, (we all assume what is being asked yet never give it a great deal of thought) then proceed to elaborate on the wrong answer. Study technique is to me a critical element in learning. This usually means SQ3R. I am not a talking head but rather an instigator of thought. I have retired from successful teaching but am still open to tutoring High School and Adult students. I believe I have learned more from my students over the years than from any source.

I do believe that all children have the ability to learn the subjects however not all children are in the right mind to do so. My goal is to show in real world, understandable terms the subjects we will work on. I believe that if a child is explained the rules in terms and words he/she understands, then he/she will grasp the material and carry it with them into the future rather than trying to cram for an exam with no retention.

I enjoy teaching children. I do have a particular interest in middle school and high school ages, but have enjoyed tutoring my daughter's younger friends as well. My approach is friendly and practical, but firm.
